Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Biochemistry senior Stacey Wardenfelt traveled to San Diego last month to present at the 2018 National Conference in Experimental Biology.  The conference is the annual meeting of five affiliated societies, and has attendees from academics, government, non-profits and industry. While at the conference, Stacey gave a poster on her work with Chemistry faculty member Dr. Tim Dwyer on expression and purification of malate dehydrogenase protein.

Congratulations to all the graduate students who are defending their master's thesis this month. Special recognition to our chemistry undergraduatates, John Backert (BS CHEM '17) and Lexi  Spertzel (BS BIOCHEM '17, not pictured), That includes a  special congratulations to our Graduate Assistants (L to R ),  Corinna Carter (BS CHEM '17), Charmeyce Buck (BS)  and Carli Castiglia Allison (BS CHEM '17).  They will be hooded at the  SU graduate and professional  commencement (SU Online) ceremony taking place on Wednesday May 16th. If you missed the ceremony, it can be viewed here. Congratulations to all!

A students versus faculty basketball challenge was held last Friday, the third in a semesterly series of matchups. Last spring and fall, the faculty prevailed in matches of ultimate Frisbee and beach volleyball respectively. This year the students won 62-50 and earned bragging rights until next time. Congratulations students!

After postponement for rain, the 3rd Annual Spring Spectacular was held on the lawn of the Manning Academic Center last week with gorgeous weather.  It was a great event, with music, math puzzles and games and lots of demonstrations. Some highlights of the event were the exploding ping pong fountain, liquid nitrogen ice cream and a non-Newtonian fluid pool.  If you would like to see live video and more coverage of the event, visit the SOS Facebook page, or videos on the SU YouTube channel, here and here
