Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Date: 2019

Jasper and Brian

This year in Chemistry Integrative Lab, students are working in groups to complete a quantitative analysis project all their own. They come up with an idea, research it, write a proposal and develop their own methods. This week in lab students are realizing that research isn't as straightforward as it seems. They are collecting preliminary data and going back to revise their methods. Chemistry majors Jasper and Brian are working on the calculations for the preparation of new calibration standards after realizing the original plan would not be sensitive enough. Other students this week were trying to determine the retention time of a vitamin E standard by HPLC, while others were preparing samples of melatonin for an investigation of the light sensitivity of the chemical. Students will continue to work on their projects, completing a group notebook and a final poster of their experiments.

Olivia Magic Show

The American Chemical Society club puts on a chemistry magic show every year. Recently their show has become an event in the Maryland Stem Festival. They performed the show to a packed room of county middle school students and to our own underclassmen. New this year was the enhanced flame test, which demonstrates the colors emitted by metals when they are heated in a flame. Senior chemistry major Olivia Apicella is shown conducting the flame experiment. Many other club members also presented experiments.

MAALACT 2019

Dr, Sara Narayan attended the 52nd annual MAALACT conference at St. John's University in New York last week. The meeting features a plenary lecture, a banquet dinner, and round table discussions/workshops related to chemistry sub-disciplines, writing, and assessment. MAALACT is a professional association of chemistry teachers from the independent liberal arts colleges of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the southern regions of New York State, and the District of Columbia. Its purpose is to facilitate the exchange of ideas, enhance professional development, and promote the interests of small college chemistry programs.
