Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Date: Oct 4, 2015

Last week, Dr. Dawn Ward presented her research on finding compounds to target the Hepatitus C virus at the 42nd National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Conference in Orlando, Florida.  At the conference, in addition to presenting her research, Dr. Ward was able to visit many other research presentations and exhibitors from industry, government and academia.  Dr. Ward is pictured above giving her presentation and also with NOBCChE President, Talitha Hampton-Mayo (left), a Program Manager at AstraZeneca.

Junior Alexis Spertzel is excited about her first independent research experience.  She is working with organic chemistry faculty member, Dr. Will Harrell, synthesizing small molecules that will serve as inhibitors of botulinum neurotoxin. Although the semester has just started, Lexie is having fun and has learned a lot. She likes working one-on-one with a faculty member and learning new techniques and reactions. She looks forward to learning more throughout the semester!
