Recent graduate, Ian Liyayi (Biochem ’18) presented his work with Dr. Tracey Mason in the spring 2018 semester at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Indianapolis earlier this month. Ian is currently enrolled in a yearlong research intensive, NIH funded post baccalaureate training program at the University of Georgia. He is also actively applying to Ph.D. programs and for an NIH graduate research fellowship, which he can use during graduate research.

While you were on the couch in a post-meal food coma or shopping for Black Friday bargains, these dedicated alumni were doing their part to keep the streets of Baltimore safe. Erika Harden (left, BS’14/MS’15) and Shelby Litz (BS’15/MS’16) were recently photographed on the job with Baltimore Police-Forensics by WJZ-TV CBS affiliate. Warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving!

Chris Toth, BS Biochemistry 2016, is a second year student in the Physician Assistant Program at the University of Toledo. In a recent conversation, he told us the following:

“During my time at Stevenson I discovered:

• The importance of being a team player which is integral to my future profession now
• How to critically think through problem based learning that has translated into problem based learning at the graduate level
• The foundations of being an adaptable and life-long learner”

In January, Chris has clinical rotations and then graduates in December 2019! Everyone in the Chemistry Department at SU couldn’t be more proud of Chris and his accomplishments!

Chemistry faculty member Dr. Jeremy Burkett and Science writing instructor Dr. Kerry Spencer came together to explain the Alchemy in Frankenstein during a science-meets-literature collaborative event between Schools at Stevenson last month. Participants also heard about the history of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, listened to recitations from creative writing students, ate cake and watched movies.
