Chemistry and Biochemistry News

Last summer, biochemistry junior Michele Collingsworth did research focused on fin whale calls detected in the waters off of North Carolina under the direction of Dr. Lynn Hodge. Michele examined the rate at which fin whales produced two specific call types throughout the breeding season, as changes in production rate during this time might convey information on reproductive status. Michele presented her research at the 2015 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Marine Mammal Symposium (SEAMAMMS) will just took place in Virginia Beach, VA. This conference is a regional, student-oriented, scientific marine mammal meeting and Michele loved and benefitted from her experience. Her trip was funded by the School of the Sciences.

In addition to winning the student chapter award and all the various scientific presentations, students and faculty found time for some fun as well!

Faculty and students from SU were excited to participate in the ACS National Meeting in Denver. This conference drew nearly 14,000 chemists, and more than 10,000 scientific papers were presented. SU faculty and staff gave oral presentations and poster presentations on a wide variety of research projects including biochemistry, computational chemistry, cancer research, environmental chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. Everyone had an amazing time at the meeting. Special thanks to the School of the Sciences and the SU Faculty Development Fund for funding this trip for all 17 participants!

Stevenson University’s chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Club was recognized nationally as one of 75 “Commendable Chapters.” Chemistry and biochemistry students are attending the ACS National Convention in Denver, Colorado where they accepted this award.

Several of these students will also be presenting research projects that they have participated in throughout the week. Congratulations Mustangs!

The Chemistry Department is pleased to announce that we have 11 students and 6 faculty members participating in the 249th ACS National Meeting in Denver at the end of March. In these initial pictures, students and faculty are putting the finishing touches on posters and practices their presentations. Everyone is very excited for the upcoming trip!
