Communication News

Students from Western Run residence hall and their Faculty in the Halls mentors, business communication professors Leeanne Bell McManus and Chip Rouse, enjoyed a spooky night of haunts and history in Fells Point on Nov. 6. The "Haunted Ghost Tour" provided a wealth of history about the Fells Point area, and the professional tour guide had some scary narratives about the ghosts who still roam the old port town. The evening ended with a delicious gelato!

Great thanks goes out to School of Design Industry Specialist Jennifer Marin Jericho and the entire Office of Career Services for the "Steve Talks" event on Nov. 5. Professionals from a variety of fields participated in the afternoon sessions, while alum Jamie Windom gave the keynote address.

Lots of BizComms attended the event, along with many other students from the School of Design, and they are shown in some of the photos above.

Junior Emma Ragon (right) is interning with the Business Communication faculty under the mentorship of department chair Chip Rouse.  Emma’s duties have included event planning, helping with the First-Year Seminar class, attending department meetings, ordering swag and supplies, updating the blog, writing surveys, composing the newsletter, attending Open Houses, and a variety of other jobs that demand careful and thorough attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and excellent communication skills.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, T.J. Smith, the Director of Media Relations for the Baltimore City Police Commissioner's office spoke to the Public Speaking class of Jessica Kartalija, adjunct instructor in Business Communication.  He discussed the importance of being a good public speaker, understanding your audience and target demo, and representing the entire City Police Department.

Smith also explained to the students how he was trained, how he became comfortable talking to the media and why preparation for any speaking event is crucial. (Photo courtesy of Jessica Kartalija)

Senior Mollie Meeder is interning with the Bonacci Liberto Group, a cutting-edge real estate group of Cummings & Co. Realty, with offices in Canton. Mollie’s mentor,  John Bonacci, relies on her to help with marketing new homes through print, media, word-of- mouth campaigns, and a multitude of other methods. Mollie’s creative approach to marketing has been a strong asset in the internship.
