Communication News

Business Communication professors Stephanie Verni, Leeanne Bell McManus, and Chip Rouse presented a symposium on event planning to about 250 National Security Agency employees at Fort Meade on June 22, 2017, at the invitation of an alum and her colleagues in the Communications Skills Community at NSA. Those in attendance were excited to learn more about how communication skills can impact event planning, and the presentation was live-streamed to other NSA employees as far away as Australia! In the photo, the three textbook authors are shown at Stevenson University as they spoke in 2016 at the launch of their textbook on event planning. (Photo courtesy of the National Security Agency)

Congratulations to one of Business Communication's most insightful and caring writing mentors, Jack Gilden, who just signed a contract with the University of Nebraska Press for publication of his book, "Triumph and Disaster," in the fall of 2018.

As Jack writes, "It's a story about the contentious relationship between Johnny Unitas and his coach, Don Shula, in the 1960s. The book also discusses the success and failures of those two men and how they personally gave rise to their game and helped shape American culture in ways they never imagined. The winding story explores the era's many social movements including the Vietnam war, civil rights, and the sexual revolution."

His research included personal interviews with Raymond Berry, Don Shula, Joe Namath, Jimmy Orr, Bobby Boyd, Sam Havrilack, Tom Matte, Gay Talese, Gary Collins, Frank Ryan, Bill Curry, Dan Sullivan, Charley Winner, Jan Unitas and many others.

We are so proud to be associated with such an amazing writer! In the photo, he appears with Sam Schaeffer, one of many departmental interns he has mentored through the years.

Stevenson BizComm alum and current Admissions Office staffer Jen Antonelli continues to make her way running across the United States to raise money for and awareness of cancer. On her 4000+-mile journey through the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adult’s 4K for Cancer program, Jen and her co-runners began a 49-day journey in San Francisco in honor of those among family and friends who have suffered or died from the disease....Click here to read more.

Class of 2017 Business Communication graduate Kris DeJesus (third from the right in the photo) has been a champion of (and at) dodgeball throughout his years at Stevenson, even initiating the university's Dodgeball Club. His current semi-professional team recently finished in the top two at the regional qualifying round in Pennsylvania against over 15 teams, which meant that Kris' team qualified for the national tournament in Chicago. ...Click here to read more.
