Communication News

The faculty in the department of Business Communication welcomed students who have been accepted into the university for the 2018-19 academic year with an exciting game of Kahoot! played together on Saturday, April 7. Students and their parents were challenged to identify a variety of brands using an app on their mobile phones, and then the students talked about developing their own personal brand. Department chair and associate dean Nadene Vevea kept the scene lively and engaging.

Congratulations to Business Communication alumna Amanda "Mimi" Bory Tinkler, class of 2009, on her promotion to the Executive Director at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation. Since 2011, Mimi has supported major hospital initiatives with philanthropic funding at UM SJMC for projects including renovations of operating rooms, hospital wings and the Perinatal Center; the nursery, medical library and infusion center, and more, according to the Daily Record. She is the youngest executive director in the University of Maryland system.

Prior to being named executive director, Mimi served as the director of Communications and Philanthropy Services for the UM SJMC Foundation and manager of donor relations.

Mimi was a five-time Carson's Scholar Award Winner, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and a Spirit of Women National Award Winner, recognized on “The Today Show."

While at Stevenson University, Mimi served as editor-in-chief of The Villager; president of MAP; public relations director of the sophomore and senior councils; enjoyed membership in three honor societies; and completed three internships. She received Stevenson's Young Alumni Award and was the keynote speaker for the 2018 Lambda Pi Eta induction ceremony.

Mimi has been back several times to the university and the department to help Business Communication students with advice and example.

Congratulations, Mimi!

Congratulations to Business Communication alum Mackenzie Wieder, who is thru hiking the Appalachian Trail this spring. In the photo, she's rejoicing having completed the first 100 miles of the trail at Albert Mountain in North Carolina. The Appalachian Trail goes along its summit, which is around 5200ft high.  Mackenzie commented on her Facebook page that this was the best 100 she's ever received!

Mackenzie is keeping everyone updated on her progress through Facebook and Instagram posts. At this point, she has 2,081 miles to go on her journey.
