Senior farewell communication online

The Communication faculty gathered remotely and, via BlueJeans, spent some time reminiscing with the seniors about their years at Stevenson. The online gathering gave everyone one more chance to talk about their SU memories and hopes for the future. We were grateful for the opportunity to say a brief farewell to the communication majors!

Here's what many of our students remembered (with thanks to Professor Stephanie Verni for taking notes):

Faculty and students in the communication department met remotely via BlueJeans on May 7 for their first-ever "Fireside Chat." Everyone talked about what they have been doing besides classwork since the stay-at-home order was issued, and the group spent a bit of time trying to explain to Dr. Greene about The Netflix. It was great to "see" our students and colleagues and hear their voices once again! More students participated than what the screen capture shows here, but BlueJeans displays only nine images at once.

Dr. Heather HarrisCommunication professor Dr. Heather Harris has been named the inaugural chair of the Inclusion, Equity, and Justice Committee on the Public Justice Center (PJC) of Maryland's Board. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Justice Center, Dr. Harris is committed "to being a force that is pursing systemic change to build a just society, to use legal tools to help people confront legal and institutional barriers that keep them from thriving," according to the PJC website. The organization challenges oppressive practices and policies through legal advocacy. Here, Dr. Harris speaks at a Stevenson Commencement.

Jacob TatumThe department of Communication is happy to congratulate junior Jacob Tatum, who was named as the men's lacrosse honoree for the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Sportsmanship Team for Stevenson University.

According to gomustangsports, the MAC Sportsmanship Teams "recognize student-athletes who exemplify great character and demonstrate the act of sportsmanship both and off the field. These student-athletes were selected by the head coaches from their respective teams. They represent their team, institution and the conference with high integrity, and exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches and opponents."

Anniversary teams logoThe Stevenson University athletic department has announced the first of its spring 25th Anniversary teams, beginning with women's beach volleyball. The three students named to the anniversary team were all Business Communication graduates!

Kristen Brooks Moler '17, Samantha Perillo '14 '17 M.S., and Lauren Weaver '18 were the three beach volleyball players comprising this first anniversary year team for the sport.

In order to be eligible for the 25th Anniversary teams, student-athletes must have exhausted their eligibility prior to 2018-19, have graduated from Villa Julie/Stevenson, and left their program and the institution in good standing. Teams were selected with input from the head coach of each program, along with former coaches and players and a committee of Stevenson athletics staff.

Congratulations to these three superstar student-athletes!
