The BizComm interns greeted Owen Rouse, a partner in the commercial real estate firm of Manekin, LLC, during their class meeting on Tuesday, April 7. The brother of BizComm department chair Chip Rouse, as well as a member of Stevenson's President's Advisory Council, Rouse is responsible for identifying equity capital and sourcing new business opportunities at Manekin. He offered some tips to the interns to make networking easier, helping them see the possibilities of growing from good to better to best.

With such heavy reliance on their mobile technologies, the students need to learn to develop stronger interpersonal skills to serve them in face-to-face networking events. The guest speaker provided them with methods of working a room with politeness and charm.



Senior Alaina Peterson's love of travel led her to an internship at The Travel Boutique, a full-service travel agency located in historic Savage Mill. Under the mentorship of Yvette Shaqir, the president of sales and industry relations (in the photo on the right), Alaina is learning how travel agencies plan itineraries, book travel, work with various resorts' business development managers, and respond to challenges. A career in travel is definitely in Alaina's future!

It's another case of a BizComm alum mentoring one of our current students! Senior Taylor Festerman (left) is thrilled to be working in promotions at WXCY country radio under the mentorship of Kelly Taylor, the promotions coordinator and a former BizComm herself! Kelly's own internship at the station led to her job in promotions there, and she is happily sharing her knowledge with the new intern. Promotions involves lots of contact with fans, and Taylor is using all her interpersonal skills to make a success of her work at WXCY.

Senior Tara Shishmanian is very busy working with Grow and Fortify, formerly the Maryland Wineries Association, under the direction of Kevin Atticks, the CEO of the management firm "developed to assist businesses and create and strengthen organizations in the value-added agriculture, ag-tourism and food systems sectors," according to Grow and Fortify's website. Tara is involved in event planning, writing and editing copy, designing advertising pieces, and helping to launch the new organization.

Senior Leanne Magyar  (right) has enjoyed her work with Stevenson University Admissions, an internship under the steady guidance of Elizabeth Fitzgerald, the associate director of admissions. Leanne has found a career path that she loves, and her work has included everything from college fairs to information sessions, to dinners with admitted students and just about anything in between. Leanne's interpersonal and public speaking skills have served her well during her time in the Admissions office.
