The Business Communication department of Stevenson University will be well represented at this year's Eastern Communication Association convention in Philadelphia, Penn.  From April 22-26, students and departmental faculty will sit on panels, present research, attend sessions, meet with colleagues from other universities, and enjoy the conference, this year titled "Deliberation." Faculty members Deric Greene, Leeanne Bell McManus, Stephanie Verni and Chip Rouse will accompany students Courtney Hastings, Megan McSwain, Peighton Perrone and Lanie Swanhart to the event. More updates to come.

When the call went out that the School of Design's interim dean, Amanda Hostalka, could use some student help staffing the pre-Open House information session table, BizComm students stepped up to help! It meant an 8 a.m. appearance on a Saturday morning in the Owings Mills gym, but these terrific students were willing and ready. They included (from left) Sarah Cullison, Emma Ragon, Siegfried Schmidt, Courtney Hastings, and Katlyn Lamp. Thanks to these students who willingly stepped up to help the School of Design. Above, CIS student Tyler Price joins Mark Hergan,  vice president for enrollment management, to announce Stevenson's latest challenge! As we attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest exercise ball class, we are hoping that you will join in the fun! If you are interested in participating in this event, please use the following link to register. All participants are asked for a $5 donation which will support the Wounded Warrior Project.  If you have questions about the event,  please email Morgan Somerville, Director of Student Engagement, at  Here's the sign-up link:

On February 7, Biz Comm Senior Courtney Hastings was named Mar-Del Watermelon Queen 2015 at the Mar-Del Watermelon Convention held at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Maryland.  To win the title, Courtney had to interview with a panel of judges, write and film a 30-second commercial, give a three-minute speech, and answer an impromptu question on stage.  Courtney will now spend the year traveling the United States and Canada, making appearances, interviewing with media, and serving as a spokesperson and public relations ambassador for the watermelon industry and Mar-Del Watermelon Association.  She will compete for the national title next February in New Orleans.  Congratulations, Courtney!  (Photo courtesy of Courtney Hastings)

Though the weather outside might have been frigid, the BizComm students helping out with the recent "Future Stevenson Scholars Day" Open House were shining like stars! Junior Tyler Turk previewed a video he created for the department, and the students then talked the audience through the Valentine's Day presentation of "The Top 10 Reasons I Love Business Communication." The event included delicious cupcakes and the department's signature brand, the "Candy Bar." Afterwards, the students and faculty all spoke personally with the families in attendance. We are enormously proud of their professionalism and enthusiasm! The students were (back row, l-r): Emily Rosenthal, Megan McSwain, Sarah Cullison, Courtney Hastings, Emma Ragon, Jackie Cooper, Kristen Brooks, Tyler Turk; (front row, l-r): Jamal Williams, Alex Parker, Chloe Redmond, Colleen Shipley and Kaitlin Kirkwood.
