Business Communication News

Date: Aug 2018

Three professors in the department of Business Communication will present a free webinar for those interested in their textbook, Event Planning: Communicating Theory and Practice, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.  Leeanne Bell McManus, Chip Rouse, and Stephanie Verni will be live, discussing ways to use the textbook in a classroom. REGISTER HERE for the webinar.

Business Communication junior Lauren Aversa has begun her reporting internship at SUTV under the direction of Aaron Harris, the director of digital broadcast media, through the internship program headed by Sonya Lawyer, assistant professor and internship director in the School of Design.

Harris writes, "Lauren just did her first story  .... and it got 1100 views on Facebook, 865 on Instagram and 589 on Twitter so far."  Lauren will do one report a week, and you can see her first piece here. She joins other Business Communication majors Christine Favata and Krystal Alexis as SUTV reporters. Good luck to all this semester! (Photo from YouTube)

The communication faculty are eager to welcome back students to a new year that promises to be filled with a variety of activities and exciting events! A second communication major has been approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and will begin in the fall of 2019. The incoming first-year class is thrilled to get started on their academic adventures, and returning students are enrolled in some exciting communication classes, including Travel Writing, The Mill, and Advanced Public Speaking. Students, remember to take some time to stop by your advisor's office to say hello as the semester begins!
Business Communication senior Grace Clark (left) has spent the summer interning at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, under the supervision of anchor Jessica Kartalija, a general assignment reporter and anchor of the noon and 5 p.m. newscasts with the CBS affiliate. Grace has enjoyed her time at WJZ-TV as a general newsroom intern, and will be applying her knowledge to her service this fall as senior assignment editor for The Villager. Here, Grace and her mentor are right at home in the newly redesigned anchor desk at the station. (Photo courtesy of Grace Clark)

A wonderfully energized Convocation ceremony on August 23, 2018, welcomed transfer and first-year students, their families, faculty and staff to a new year at Stevenson University. In the photos above, clockwise from top left, Provost Susan Gorman, Ph.D., offered an initial greeting to those in attendance in the gym, and the marching band was again on hand to bring a vibrancy to the occasion. Members of the University Singers, including Business Communication major Emma Cathy Smith (in band uniform) also offered a taste of their musical talent. BizComm senior and SGA president Lauren Novsak spoke for the students as she extended a thoughtful greeting to the new Mustangs.  SU President Elliot Hirshman was eager to get the academic year off to a good start, and the RAs (in blue t-shirts) energized the gym with their enthusiasm.

In the photo at bottom center, BizComm alum Julie Mazer is flanked by two Business Communication faculty members, Leeanne Bell McManus and Stephanie Verni. Julie joined the Sodexo staff as a marketing coordinator and was on hand at the picnic following Convocation to greet parents and new students.
