From Stevenson University president, Dr. Elliot Hirshman:

To the Stevenson University Community,

Today, as the full impact of the events in Annapolis touch so many people throughout our state, they touch our Stevenson community as well. Rebecca Smith, a Villa Julie College alumna who earned her degree here in 2005, lost her life in this terrible tragedy.

Rebecca was a business communication major who also played as a forward on our field hockey team in 2002. Faculty member Chip Rouse, who taught journalism to Rebecca, remembers her as “an incredibly cheerful and industrious student in the business communication program. She was very outgoing, had a lot of friends, and was always planning some funny kind of event to help build community or raise money for a cause.”

As a community, we honor her memory and offer our deepest condolences to her family, fiancé, and colleagues at the Capital Gazette. You can read more about Rebecca’s life at the Capital Gazette newspaper.

The department of Business Communication is on top of its game when it comes to classes being offered in fall, 2018. In addition to the ever-popular Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication classes, the department will offer several sections of Communication Ethics, Conflict and Negotiation, and even a fall section of Organizational Communication, typically offered only in the spring. An Event Planning and Publicity class filled up fast, but there's still room in Principles and Practices of Public Relations. The ever-popular Advertising Campaign class is still open, and a section of Travel Writing is sure to appeal to anyone who's been bitten by the travel bug and wants to share a story. Students can try their hand at Feature Writing or Advanced Public Speaking, or join The Villager staff for credit. It's sure to be an exciting semester!

Congratulations to Business Communication alum Nicholas ("Nick") Farano, who will start the Princeton AlumniCorps Emerging Leaders program on June 28, 2018. Nick explains that this is a nine-month professional development program that brings together 16 aspiring nonprofit leaders in DC to develop the leadership capabilities, management skills, and confidence to advance their professional contributions and accelerate their careers.

Nick is currently the public relations and fundraising manager at the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington. Prior to that, he worked for the American Cancer Society in a variety of positions. Nick remains a loyal Stevenson alumni, serving on the SU Alumni Board,  and he received his MBA from Capella University in 2017.

Business Communication alum Laura Ford Gustowarow recently received her Senior Professional in Human Resources® (SPHR®) Certification from the HR Certification Institute. This certification is recognized as a "professionally relevant credential for those who have mastered the strategic and policy-making aspects of HR management as practiced in the United States. retains sole ownership of the badge," according to the HR Certification Institute. Laura currently works as a Sr. Human Resources Manager at Secure Innovations, LLC, in Columbia, Maryland. The department offers congratulations to Laura! (Photo from LinkedIn)

Congratulations to Business Communication alum Jake Quimby, who served as the co-chair of this year's Baltimore Gay Pride parade on June 16, 2018. According to the Baltimore Sun, "The parade kicked off at about 1 p.m. Waves of marchers walked down Charles Street from 33rd Street to 23rd Street, waving rainbow flags and handing out candy, while attendees lining Charles Street cheered and danced along to music from drumlines and DJs." Baltimore companies and political candidates were present at the event, and a block party followed the parade later Saturday afternoon.

Jake serves as Senior Specialist in Recruitment Marketing with Stevenson's Office of Admissions.
