Business Communication News

Date: Oct 2016

Word just came in from BizComm alum (Class of 2016) Zuryna Smith, who writes that she has started a new business, Smith and Foote Communications, LLC (www.smithandfoote.com) with her friend and Stevenson graduate, Dwight Foote. The two decided to combine their talents to assist small businesses with creative and web design needs. Through strategic services the partners hope to help organizations reach short- and long-term goals with optimal support every step of the way. The Stevenson grads pride themselves on accepting challenges and welcome growth opportunities, according to their website.

The day after he addressed the Business Communication interns on the topic of networking, guest speaker Owen Rouse moderated Bisnow's Baltimore-Washington Industrial & Logistics event and spoke about recent commercial development. The event also provided ample opportunity for networking in the field.

The students in this semester's Special Topics in Travel Writing class are busy traveling to a variety of sites in the region as they gather information to write 2500-word articles for their final projects. Students in Professor Stephanie Verni’s class were asked to select a spot in the Maryland-Virginia-Washington, D.C. area and spend a minimum of two days exploring the location, interviewing people, and immersing themselves in the place as they take in the splendor of the location.

Through exercises such as keeping a detailed travel journal, creating a photo library, and conducting various types of primary and secondary research, students are working to craft articles that illuminate their place of travel through their own personal experiences and narratives. Additionally, the class reads and critically analyzes articles written by world-class travel writers including Paul Theroux, Andrew McCarthy, Pico Iyer, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Rolf Potts in order to gain a solid foundation of the variety of travel writing and how it can be transformative and enlightening.

The Business Communication interns were treated to a guest lecture by Owen Rouse, the senior vice president and director of capital markets at Manekin LLC, on the topic of networking. With his work in the fields of capital raising and investment sales, Rouse has years of experience in networking, which he shared with the juniors and seniors in the internship class. The brother of Professor Chip Rouse, he serves on President Kevin J. Manning's Presidential Advisory Committee at Stevenson. His words of advice? "Listen until it tires you out, and get out of your comfort zone."
Senior Alaina Maracotta snagged one of the coveted Ravens' internships for the fall, under the mentorship of Adam Rudel, the coordinator of marketing and football outreach for the team. Alaina has been involved with game-day operations on the Ravens Walk, along with a variety of other Ravens events, including outreach to high school football teams in the area. Alaina's interest in the sports marketing world grew out her participation in Professor Stephanie Verni's Sports Communication class.
