Business Communication News

Date: Jun 14, 2015

BizComm grad Courtney Hastings continues her job as the Mar-Del Watermelon Queen, acting as a spokeswoman for the organization. Here she is seen reading to students at Rehoboth Beach (Delaware) Elementary School, about healthy eating habits. Courtney's speaking and marketing communication skills helped her earn the competitive title. She continues through the summer in her spokeswoman duties.

BizComm grad Sean Waag has let us know he has been hired full-time at Social Toaster, where he interned this spring. A new position was created for Sean, who has talents in research, communication and design. Here he is seen on the right with his supervisor, Steve Mahaney, the vice president of social media strategy, and BizComm alum Sarah Rixham, who also interned at Social Toaster and now works there along with Sean. Congratulations, Sean!

The BizComm first-year students will be traveling to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, for the annual First-year Seminar trip. The department annually plans a day-long outing for the group, and in the past have taken the first-year students to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Annapolis. This year's trip will be a first for the department and is scheduled for Sept. 25. The students will tour the area rich in history and then will complete a communication project about their experiences by the end of the semester. (Photo from harpersferry.org)

The Business Comunication department has scheduled two "Lunch Lessons" for the fall on September 17 at 5 p.m. and on October 13 at noon. These events are open to students in the major and include a catered meal with alumni guests and departmental faculty. The alums talk about their career paths from their Stevenson days and offer advice to the students who attend. Stay tuned for an invitation to each event -- the first ten students who respond will be able to enjoy the meal! At left, photos from a previous "Lunch Lesson" held in the Ratcliffe Room with invited alums Greg Furshman and Tracy Swank.
