Applied Mathematics News

Last week, physics faculty member, Dr. David Drewer gave a seminar on the proposed revision of the International System of Units (SI) including the new proposed definition of the kilogram.  It was an informative and well-received presentation!

We learned today that the new standard has been approved by the General Conference of the International Bureau of Weights.

Mathstravaganza was one of the events at SU as a part of Maryland STEM Festival, a showcase of STEM events across the state of Maryland to encourage students of all ages to take a greater interest in STEM with the hope that they will pursue a STEM-based job or career. Mathstravaganza featured several mathematically-inspired interactive games and demonstrations, all run by our students and faculty.  These games and demonstrations could be understood and appreciated by people of all ages and mathematical backgrounds. We were excited to have many visitors to our event.  As usual, Mathstravaganza was amazing and fun!  Special thanks to faculty member Dr. Ben Wilson for leading the event.

Math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson, was invited to speak at Hood College for their Mathematics Seminar. His talk was based on the research in computational linguistics he did jointly with Applied Math majors Billy Heidel and Evan Williams over the summer during the S3RP (Summer Science Scholars Research Program).

Each year, ranks the most lucrative majors and Forbes reported them recently.  Included on their list are Applied Math (#5) and Actuarial Science (#1).  Our Applied Math majors are well prepared!

Congratulations to Applied Math junior, Caroline Dangel, on being chosen as Athlete of the Week!  In the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal on October 31st, Caroline had 15 assists, 2 service aces, 3 digs and scored 4 points.  Go Mustangs!
