Applied Mathematics News

The Applied Math freshman completed a day of service known at SU as Mustangs Make a Difference Day. The service project conducted by the students involved making math flashcards for a local elementary school.  These colorful cards will be used by local students for extra practice in their math classes.  We enjoyed making a difference for others!

The Department of Mathematics and Physics is really excited about our second annual Escape Room.  This year's Halloween-themed game is designed by two of our faculty members, Dr. Will Hodge and Dr. Ben Wilson. Teams of four and five students, faculty and staff from across the university have signed up to compete to see who can escape the fastest.  Stay tuned for pictures of the room and to learn which team wins.

Math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson, was invited to speak at The College of New Jersey for their Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium series. His talk was based on the research in computational linguistics he did jointly with Applied Math majors Billy Heidel and Evan Williams over the summer during the S3RP program.

Several of our Applied Math majors, Caroline Dangel, Katie Leftridge and Darian Hileman are starters on the Women's Volleyball Team.  On Oct. 13, Stevenson faced Kean University and Cabrini University. The Mustangs won the tri-match, beating both teams in straight sets.  Pictured above is applied math junior setter Caroline Dangel diving for the ball in the Mustangs’ win against Kean University.

Our Hurricane Florence relief bake sale was very successful!  We were able to raise $405 which will directly help those who were devastated by the hurricane last month.  Special thanks to everyone who baked, bought and volunteered at the sale.  Our caring community was once again happy to help those who needed our assistance.
