Applied Mathematics News

Congratulations to Rebecca Gruver on being selected as the Slattery Scholarship Recipient for 2018.  Rebecca was chosen as the senior in the School of the Sciences who has a strong academic record and best embodies the virtues and qualities that made Dr. Susan Palmer Slattery so special:  honest, hardworking, caring, love of learning, support of women in math and science.  Rebecca was given her award at the annual Slattery Lecture which included a talk by Erik Herman, Science Engagement Specialist for Cornell University.  Lots of people attended the event in support of Rebecca- family members, friends including applied math students and others, faculty and her mentor from Booz Allen Hamilton.  She is shown here with her mentor.

Three of our applied math majors are enjoying this fall as starters on the Women's Volleyball Team!  They also find time to relax in the Math Collaboratory with friends.  Pictured here are Darian Hileman, Caroline Dengel and Katie Leftridge.

Dr. Jamie Goodall (left, Department of Public History) and Dr. Kerry Spencer's (Department of Math and Physics) paper, “The Good, The Questionable, The Toxic: Using Muggle-Borns as a Lens for First-Gen Experience with Mentorship,” will be published in an upcoming book, The Pedagogy of Harry Potter. The paper will examine the difficulty both muggle-born and first-generation university students face as they navigate appropriate and inappropriate mentor-mentee relationships without the benefit of cultural fluency and against existing biases. The paper offers advice for both students and faculty members on creating and nurturing effective mentoring relationships.

Math Teas are a chance for our students and faculty to spend time together weekly.  Games, food, discussion and relaxation all make for a good time!

The Department of Mathematics and Physics  is very excited to start the 2018-2019 year! The start of a new academic year always brings wonderful energy and excitement to campus. It also gives us a fresh start with new programs, ideas, and plans.

More details will follow on this blog about our students, our activities, exciting classes and our faculty.

WELCOME to our new students and WELCOME BACK to our returning students. We hope you’re as excited about the upcoming semester as we are!
