Applied Mathematics News

Two members of our math community, Ms. Thairen Dade, our Math Learning Specialist, and Gerald Roman-Gonzalez, an applied math senior, have family members whose lives and homes were devastated by Hurricane Maria.  KME, the Math Honor Society, and the Math/Physics Department are holding a Hurricane Maria Relief Bake Sale.  Thanks to everyone is who contributing to this today- donating baked goods, time, money and good cheer!   Hope you can come out and support our efforts!  We're at the south entrance to the Manning Academic Center.

One of the highlights of Stevenson's First Year Seminar (FYS) course is formulating a service project to bring to Mustangs Make a Difference Day. Held in conjunction with Day to Serve in the state of Maryland, it is a way for Stevenson students to volunteer and give back to their communities. Our Math FYS section ran a table allowing visitors to make tangrams for local elementary schools to help students learn problem solving skills while having fun.

Math Teas happen each Thursday!  This hour is a chance for students and faculty to talk informally, eat snacks and drink tea and to play games.  We also post the Math Problem of the Week for our students to complete.  It's a relaxing time for everyone!

Each of our new applied math majors participates in First Year Seminar.  This course assists first-year students in identifying and using specific strategies for academic, personal, and social success in college.  Our new applied math majors meet weekly with Math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson.  This small class size allows our majors to get to know one another and Dr. Wilson and to share their excitement for their first semester at SU.

Applied Math junior, Rebecca Gruver, spent her summer at Booz Allen Hamilton, a management consulting firm, as part of the 2017 National Security Scholars Program.  This prestigious program offers substantial scholarships and assistance with national security clearance processing.

Rebecca loved her experience!  She used her applied math background to work on projects in computer science and engineering.  Rebecca did such a great job that she has already been invited back for another internship for summer 2018!
