Applied Mathematics News

Half of our Applied Math majors play on sports teams at SU!  Applied Math freshman kicker Ian Gould was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, following his role in Saturday's 44-12 football win at Wilkes University!  Ian totaled 14 points as he finished 3-3 on field goal attempts and 5-5 on PAT tries on the afternoon.  His field goals came from 33, 28 and 19 yards.  Gould also averaged 52 yards per kickoff on eight kickoff attempts on the afternoon.

Congratulations to the Women's Volleyball Team, including applied math majors, Caroline Dangel, Darian Hileman, and Katie Leftridge, and applied math minor, Sarah Riggin, on winning the MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball championship this weekend with a 3-1 win over second-seeded Arcadia University.  With the win, Stevenson (32-1) earns an automatic berth to next week's NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship. The Mustangs, who are ranked No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, will learn their NCAA opponent and destination on Monday at 12:30 pm when the NCAA airs the tournament's selection show on NCAA.com.

Congratulations to all 15 teams who participated in the Escape Room!  On Halloween, everyone who took part in the Escape Room was invited to the Escape Room Celebration.  Winners were announced, prizes were awarded and everyone enjoyed snacks provided by faculty and staff.  Sign-ups for next year's Escape Room are a long way off, but all teams have already said that they are coming back for Escape Room 2018!

Students, faculty and staff report that they are really enjoying the Escape Room.  Fifteen teams are in the competition to solve this murder mystery.  Each is trying to complete the room in under an hour.  A sneak preview into the room shows a skeleton (with Escape Room developers Will Hodge and Ben Wilson) and various clues.  Winners will be announced on Halloween at a midday party!  Stay tuned...

The Math/Physics Department is excited to offer students across the university an opportunity to participate in an on-campus Escape Room!  Students will be given the opportunity to use clues and solve puzzles in groups of 4 or 5 to escape from the Math Collaboratory, S150.  The team that escapes in the fastest time will win a prize and bragging rights. This adventure, developed by faculty members, Dr. Will Hodge (physics) and Dr. Ben Wilson (math), will take place October 23-30.
