Dr. Jamie Goodall (left, Department of Public History) and Dr. Kerry Spencer's (Department of Math and Physics) paper, “The Good, The Questionable, The Toxic: Using Muggle-Borns as a Lens for First-Gen Experience with Mentorship,” will be published in an upcoming book, The Pedagogy of Harry Potter. The paper will examine the difficulty both muggle-born and first-generation university students face as they navigate appropriate and inappropriate mentor-mentee relationships without the benefit of cultural fluency and against existing biases. The paper offers advice for both students and faculty members on creating and nurturing effective mentoring relationships.
