math faculty at JMM

The 2019 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) were held locally this year, in downtown Baltimore. This gave a nice opportunity for Stevenson faculty to easily attend. The JMM attract thousands of mathematicians from around the world each year to attend talks and workshops on teaching and research and to network. Math faculty (l to r in picture above) Ben Wilson, Sarah Blanset, and Mark Branson all attended the meetings.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics is very excited to start the spring semester!  Welcome to our new students and welcome back to our returning students.  Don't forget to join us for the weekly Student-Faculty Math Tea, Thursdays 1-2 in the Math Learning Collaboratory, S150!

Applied Math senior, Jess Rega, completed her Honors Capstone internship at Santander Bank near her hometown in Massachusetts.  She presented her Capstone project, "The Metadata Catalogue" to the Stevenson Community at the Capstone Honors Presentations event and at the School of the Sciences Fall Poster Session.  We're excited to share that Jess did such a good job at Santander Bank that she was offered employment for after she graduates from Stevenson in May.  Congratulations!

The department is excited about the new articulation agreement signed with Carroll Community College.  Students who receive a Physical Science AS with Physics from Carroll can directly and seamlessly transfer to the Applied Math major at Stevenson!  After the students complete their degree at Carroll, they can easily complete their BS in Applied Math in the Scientific Track in two additional years.

Special thanks to Dr. Sarah Blanset, math faculty member, for her work on this articulation agreement.  Shown here is the signing ceremony with Stevenson University President, Dr. Elliot Hirshman (front left), and Carroll Community College President, Dr. James Ball (front right), along with academic administrators from Stevenson and Carroll, including Dr. Ellen Roskes (back left), SU Math/Physics Department Chair.
