Applied Mathematics News

Date: Jan 2018

Math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson, and his wife, Sydney Gross, completed a marathon in Phoenix over winter break. The race featured several rock 'n' roll bands scattered throughout the 26.2 mile course. Dr. Wilson has run several half marathons around the country and this was his second time completing a full marathon.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics is very excited to start the spring semester!  Welcome to our new students and welcome back to our returning students.  Don't forget to join us for the weekly Student-Faculty Math Tea, Tuesdays 1-2 in the Math Learning Collaboratory, S150!

Over winter break, Dr. Mark Branson (right) and Dr. Ben Wilson attended the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in San Diego. With thousands of mathematicians attending from around the world, the JMM is one of the largest international math conferences each year. Both professors gave presentations at the meeting: Dr. Branson spoke in a session on Humanistic Mathematics titled Fighting Alternative Facts: Teaching Quantitative Reasoning with Social Issues. Dr. Wilson presented in a session on Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning titled Active First Semester Calculus.

Applied math senior, Gerald Roman-Gonzalez, completed his Capstone internship at the Social Security Administration in the Analysis Group.  He loved working in the actuary efield as this is directly connected to his career plans.  Gerald presented his poster on "Data Mining Algorithims for Extrapolating Information from the Disability Applicant Pool" at the School of the Sciences semi-annual Poster Session in December.  Great job, Gerald!

It's always great hearing updates from our alumni!  Kellie Forsythe (Applied Math '13) and Grant Simard (Applied Math '12) live in Ashburn, Virginia. Grant is working as a contracting officer at Agile Defense.  Kellie is working at the Department of State in IT.  They travel to a lot of work-related conferences and meetings and are enjoying seeing new places in the US and worldwide.  Grant and Kellie are pictured here with their French bulldog, Thor.
