Applied Mathematics News

Date: Feb 2017

At the Paul Lack Scholars Showcase, math faculty member, Dr. Ben Wilson, presented the work that he and math junior Gerald  Roman-Gonzalez did this past summer in our S3RP Program .  The annual Scholars Showcase event allows faculty to share with the Stevenson community what research is being conducted across the various departments.  Dr. Wilson's talk, "A Mathematical Analysis of  Constructed Languages" was well attended and well received by all those present.

Congratulations to our five people who were inducted into the Maryland Epsilon chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honors Society today! To qualify for KME, students must meet certain criteria based on their GPA, class rank, the number of upper level math courses they have taken, and their performance in their math courses at Stevenson. After the induction, students and faculty enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Congratulations to Applied Math Senior, Michael Byrd who just finished his last home game for the SU Basketball Team!  In this game, he totaled 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Dr. Rachel Grotheer, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Goucher College, spoke to our students and faculty about  the mathematics behind medical imaging devices.  Her talk was called, "Can You Reconstruct a Tiger from its Stripes?"   She explained that the medical imaging machines output data that gives us information about one of the properties of the tissue, such as how it scatters light (the “stripes"), which is only part of the whole picture (the “tiger").  Everyone really enjoyed this special seminar!
