Study Abroad and Expand Your Perspective

Take part in an engaging educational experience that encourages your personal, social, and intellectual growth. The Study Abroad and Study Away programs at Stevenson University provide opportunities for you to fulfill your general education requirements or enhance the coursework in your major while exploring the world and gaining a greater understanding, appreciation, and respect for our dynamic global community.

Travel-based courses are currently offered during the Winterim term in January, in the Spring semester over Spring Break, and in the Summer.

Kenya (ENV 320)

Winterim: January 3-17, 2024

Come with us on an adventure to where biology is bigger than life. Kenya is a magical place where you can experience habitats and species that most students have only seen in movies or at a zoo in their natural habitats. We will be learning from local experts about the habitats, organisms, and human dimensions that few people get the chance to see. We will be hiking in game parks, learning about and observing wildlife interactions, hanging out elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions all in their natural environments. We will have activities and lectures from researchers, professors, game wardens. This is the trip and course that will change the way you see the natural world.

Ecuador

Winterim: January 4-16, 2024

CHS 250: International Human Services Ecuador (CHS 250) will explore the region of Ecuador around the capital of Quito and engage in community and social service activities through the Universidad San Francisco de Quito’s Service Learning Department. Students will learn about the culture of Ecuador and visit health service providers, schools, and social service providers, as well as markets, historic sites, and the equator.


CHEM 206: CHEM 206, From Folk Healers to Pharmacies: A Study in Herbal Medicines and Remedies, will take a two-week tour of Ecuador to examine the cultural and medicinal aspects of local herbal remedies. Students will learn about local traditions and visit historic sites as well as gaining field experience. Activities will include visits to traditional healers, visits to Universidad San Francisco de Quito to hear lectures from indigenous medicine experts, cloud forest hikes to visit sacred trees, bird-watching treks through the cloud forest, exploring the local markets, and trips to local historic sites.

Bahamas (PSY 350)

Winterim: January 15-20, 2024

The Culture of Psychology is an innovative course designed to encourage students to examine the relationship between diversity and psychology. Through a week’s travel to The Bahamas, students will have the opportunity to explore psychology through a different cultural lens. Students will learn about Bahamian psychology through creative arts, history, cuisine, and will gain exposure to outpatient and inpatient mental health agencies.

Spain (FDES 280 & ART 280)

Spring: March 8-17, 2024

FDES 280: The fashion design course, FDES 280 fashion study tour of Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, introduces students to the global fashion market combining classroom learning with an international study tour during spring break 2024. Students will learn about the international fashion industry and Spanish cultural sites on campus and then travel to Barcelona and Madrid, Spain during spring break to experience the culture and fashion of Spain. The study tour includes visits to museums, fashion brand showrooms, fashion retailers and cultural sights.

ART 280: The Travel Photography: Spain course (ART 280) offers students an opportunity to advance their photography skills while observing and discovering the cities of Barcelona, Madrid, and Bilbao. Students will photograph historic and contemporary landmarks, develop narrative techniques through exploration of street and nature photography, and engage with the creative culture of Spain. Upon return, students will create photo books and curate and exhibition of images resulting from the trip.

Lyon (MKT 355/MGT 335)

Spring: March 8-15, 2024

Are you interested in learning how businesses manage and market their products and brands differently based on the country of origin? Then join us in Lyon, France! Experience international management and international marketing first-hand by touring companies like the Michelin Group, furniture manufacturer Ligne Roset, and professional football stadium Olympique Lyonnais where you will get the chance to observe business decision-making from a European perspective. Finally, experience all that Lyonnaise culture has to offer with a culinary street food tour, a visit to the Musee De L’Illusion, and a visit to famed Beaujolais vineyards.

Austin, Texas (FMI 331)

Spring: March 9-17, 2024

Do film festivals still matter today, in a world where media is more available than ever on your laptop or smartphone? And how did film festivals begin? How have they helped filmmakers launch their careers over the years? In this course, we will study the evolution of festivals, from Cannes to Sundance to South by Southwest (SXSW) to the Maryland Film Festival (MDFF) and beyond. As part of this course, students will travel to SXSW (one of America’s premier annual media showcases, which includes Film, Interactive Media and Music) in Austin, Texas, during our Spring Break, to get a first-hand look at a major film festival in action.

London (ENG 204 & PHIL 260)

Summer: June 26- July 6, 2024

ENG 204: To what extent are gender and sexuality biologically determined or culturally constructed?  How do we negotiate this minefield and learn to accept and define ourselves and others?  On campus, we will begin exploring these issues through a variety of movies and plays, including Cinderella, Ever After, The Full Monty, Cloud Nine, and Blood Relations. After six weeks of class at Stevenson, we will fly to London for a ten-day tour of the city, its museums, and its world-class theatre. We will apply what we have learned as we experience theatrical productions at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, in London’s famed West End (think ‘better than Broadway’), and via contemporary British street theatre in a Jack-the-Ripper walking tour.

South Korea (HIST 211)

Summer: July 18-28, 2024

Mega K-pop groups like BTS and BlackPink and the popularity of Korean food, webtoons, K-dramas, and Korean cinema are just a fraction of the global phenomena known as the “Korean Wave” (“Hallyu). Hallyu is a recent expression of the long, rich history and culture of Korea. While learning about Korean culture, history, and pop-culture, students will also learn the basics of the Korean language as they prepare for a full immersion experience in Korea in summer 2024! We’ll visit Seoul, Busan, and Gyeongju—touring museums, enjoying bustling night life, visiting historic temples and palaces, and, of course, enjoying Korean food!

Health and Safety

Your safety and well-being is of primary importance when particpating in a study abroad program. While we cannot guarantee your safety – at home or overseas – we take specific precautions to help minimize the risks associated with travel: careful vetting of program providers and international partners; pre-departure and on-site orientations with a docus on health and safety; monitoring security reports from the State Department, CDC, World Health Organization, and others; and comprehensive international medical and evacuation insurance for all SU students abroad.

Eligibiliy

Any Stevenson University student can apply to study abroad as long as you meet stated requirements for your program. You may not be on academic or disciplinary probation and must be at least 18 years old by the departure date of your program.
