Motivating Young Women in Science and Mathematics

Participate in hands-on workshops that will develop your passion in a range of scientific fields.

This year Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) will be held virtually on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 10:00 am- 12:00 pm. Students will participate in several different workshops that will include a hands-on activity that you can complete at home. A list of materials needed will be sent to you, or materials will be shipped to your home if needed. Students will register for a cohort of workshops based on the interests of the student. We are very excited to be able to bring EYH to the students virtually during this time. If you have any questions about the program, please email

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a national network that was founded in 1974 by a group of female scientists and educators. It was their goal to encourage young women to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. It is the goal of the EYH conferences throughout the country to do just that!

The EYH Network’s programs are developed based on the following assumptions:

  1. In order to increase the participation of women in mathematics, science, and engineering careers, there must be an increase in the pool of qualified women.
  2. In order for young women to have the option to enter mathematics, science, and engineering careers, they need to choose to take the appropriate mathematics and science courses in high school.
  3. Intervention strategies are needed that increase the participation of girls in mathematics by nurturing enjoyment and confidence in mathematics, by connecting the value of mathematics to career opportunities, by providing career role models, and by actively encouraging girls to persevere in mathematics coursework.

EYH workshops showcase positive female role models in STEM careers, combined with fun, hands-on activities for middle school girls.

Each girl will participate in three hands-on workshops at the event. Please see the Workshops tab for a description of each trio of workshops. Register early to ensure there is space available in the trio desired.

For additional information, please contact the EYH planning committee through email or contact Michelle Schwartz via phone 443-394-9773.

If disability accommodations are needed to participate fully in this event, contact as soon as possible.  Please provide at least one week prior notice of your needs (though an effort will be made to fulfill last-minute requests).

This year’s EYH event is sponsored by support from Stevenson University Beverly K. Fine School of the Sciences and Toyota Financial Services.
