Brown School of Business and Leadership

 Dr. Takisha Toler, Assistant Professor of Marketing, hosted over 70 minority marketing faculty from across the US at the 10th annual Marketing Ethnic Faculty Association (MEFA) conference and gala in Boston, Mass. MEFA’s mission is to promote the professional/career development of under-represented ethnic faculty in marketing and related business disciplines. 

With the primary goal of providing a supportive networks to individuals of African American, Hispanic and Native American heritage, MEFA is based on shared teaching, research or other professional interests in the field of marketing.   Dr. Toler has served as president of MEFA for the past three years and works to foster greater awareness and appreciation of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in Business Schools and other higher education institutions within the US and abroad.

Dr. Byron Henry joins the BSOBL faculty this fall as an Associate Professor in Accounting. Prior to his current appointment, he was an Associate Professor and the Acting Chair in the Department of Accounting in the School of Business at Howard University. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Bowie State University (2009-2016), Howard University (1997-2009) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont (1996-1997). He has published articles in the areas of state and local taxation and accounting education and presented numerous papers on a wide array of accounting topics. His research interests include accounting and reporting issues affecting nonprofit organizations as well as the ethical practices and perceptions of accountants.

Byron has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in accounting through both face-to-face and online delivery systems. He strongly believes that learning is best achieved by doing and emphasizes problem-based learning in his courses to strengthen the development of critical thinking skills among his students.

Byron holds degrees in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin, George Washington University and Texas A&M University.  He is licensed to practice as a certified public accountant (CPA) in Texas and Maryland.  He held professional positions with Ernst & Whinney, the Texas State Comptroller of Public Accounts and the Texas State Auditor’s Office and has professional and community affiliations with the Texas and Maryland Societies of CPAs, the American Accounting Association, and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).  Byron currently serves on the Trustee Board of the First Baptist Church of Guilford (Columbia, MD) and officiates high school football in the local area.

The faculty has been quite busy over the summer! Check out what they've been up to:

  • Jim Kucher, D.P.A., Assistant Professor, had an article published July 3 in the International   Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation entitled “The voice of the constituent: participatory development and opportunity identification in social entrepreneurship”.
  • Vicki Doby and Barbara Rowell, Accounting Professors, served on the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants Educator’s Conference Committee which was held at the University of Maryland. The agenda for the conference included: State Board of Accountancy Update, Data Analytics and Its Impact on the Accounting Profession, Global Money Laundering and Other Frauds.
  • In August, Ann Kayes, Business Professor, presented Talent Wars: Teaching Introductory HRM Experientially at the 78th annual meeting of The Academy of Management in the session: Innovative and Experiential Methods in Teaching HRM.

  • Accounting faculty did all the prep work for a new exciting student opportunity: Pizza with Professionals:  linking with Career Services to bring professionals from a variety of accounting backgrounds to the students.  Our first meeting will be with Cohen and Co. on Thursday, September 27, from 12-1:30 pm.  Students will lunch and chat with people involved in tax, audit, and crypto-currency.  There will be a second event in November. Stay tuned for more details!
  • Accounting faculty also did all the preparatory work for the Accounting Fair on Monday, September 24, from 4:30-6:30pm.  Students, with the support of Dr. Wernecke as moderator, worked to advertise, sign up, and receive payment from local and regional firms. In addition, students have purchased gifts, lined up Rockland as the venue, and ordered food.  

     

Business Administration students, Anthony Raspa and Annaliese Rutishauser, are completing their summer internships with Northrop Grumman Corporation. Due to their impressive performance, they were recently extended and accepted job offers, upon graduation, with Northrop Grumman. Business Administration faculty wish to congratulate Anthony and Annaliese on achieving this significant milestone!
