Elliot Hirshman, Ph.D.

Stevenson welcomed its seventh president, Elliot Hirshman, Ph.D., on July 3, 2017. Hirshman joined the University after serving as president of San Diego State University (SDSU) for six years. Under President Hirshman’s leadership, SDSU implemented an integrated budget and financial strategy; raised more than $800 million in private philanthropy for scholarships and new initiatives and programs; and established and endowed its Honors College.

Academic Background

President Hirshman earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in economics and mathematics from Yale and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from UCLA. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association. His research and teaching both focus on the psychopharmacology of human cognition, using an interdisciplinary approach that involves collaboration among psychologists, medical doctors and statisticians. President Hirshman has served as associate editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory & Cognition and the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.

Family

President Hirshman is married to Jeri Hirshman. Their daughter, Wendy, graduated from Muhlenberg College and works for George Mason Mortgage, LLC. Their son, Nathan, is a student at the Duke University School of Medicine.
