Stevenson Welcomes Three New Leaders in the Berman School of Nursing & Health Professions
Join us in welcoming three new and accomplished healthcare leaders in our Berman School of Nursing & Health Professions (SNHP): Dr. Marie Elena Barry, Dean, School of Nursing & Health Professions; Dr. Vanessa Velez, Graduate Program Director, Nursing, and Chief Nurse Administrator; and Dr. Jamie Carter, Chair, Nursing Department. They join Lara Biagiotti, Medical Laboratory Science Program Coordinator, in providing leadership for the Berman SNHP.

Dr. Vanessa Velez, Program Director for Graduate Nursing and the Chief Nurse Administrator for Stevenson University, is a registered nurse who holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Notre Dame of Maryland and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to joining Stevenson, she served as the Director of Professional Practice, Education and Research at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center where she was responsible for leading the Center for Nursing Excellence.
Dr. Marie Elena Barry, Dean for the Sandra R. Berman School of Nursing & Health Professions, is an alumna of Stevenson’s Master of Nursing program and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Chatham University in Pittsburgh. She holds a graduate certificate in the Business of Nursing from Johns Hopkins University and is working to earn her second doctorate, a Ph.D., in Nursing Education. Her career in academia began at Boise State University in Idaho and continued at Capella University where she advanced through a series of progressively responsible leadership positions, most recently as the Director of the BSN program in the School of Nursing & Health Sciences.
Dr. Jamie Carter, Department Chair of Nursing with responsibility for the undergraduate campus-based and online nursing programs, is a registered nurse with a Master of Science degree in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore. Dr. Carter is a certified Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with multiple years of experience as an emergency and trauma nurse. As an established nurse educator, Dr. Carter’s experience includes classroom, clinical, and online teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as faculty leadership roles in course development and coordination.
