Balti Gurls: Artist - in - Residence
The Visual Communication Design program at Stevenson University is proud to announce our Spring 2018 Artists in Residence, Baltimore based collective, Balti Gurls. Founded in 2014, Balti Gurls is a collective of Black womxn creators and makers based in Baltimore, MD. With a particular focus on new media and cross-disciplinary practice, their mission is to cultivate platforms and “creative safer space” that prioritizes Black womxn and queer folxs, and uplifts communities of color in general. Current members include Suldano Abdiruhman, Khadija Nia Adell, N'Deye Diakhate, Jessica Hyman, Stephanie Wallace, and Jenné Afiya.
Balti Gurls will be on campus from Tuesday, February 20, through Friday, February 23, visiting classes and interacting with students. On Tuesday, February 20, at 6pm, in the School of Design Soundstage (SD101), they will present their work and hold a panel discussion titled, “A Look: Black Womyn, Social Media, and the Reshaping of Black Aesthetics,” moderated by Bilphena Yahwon. A light reception will take place at 5:30pm in the lobby of that building. On Friday, February 23, from 7pm-9pm, Balti Gurls will host an open mic, featuring DJ Trillnatured, Sadiyah Bashir, and the Stevenson community. Both events are free and open to the public.
The Balti Gurls residency is co-sponsored by the School of Design Visual Communication Design program and the Office of Multicultural Experience. The events are presented in collaboration with the Our Many Ways of Being Collective.
