But first they must catch you | Ryan Lytle
But First They Must Catch You is a series of needle-felted, wool drawings on industrial felt. Lytle explores line weight, quality, and overlapping. The scale of the felt sheets allows the figures to be larger than life. The title of the series comes from Richard Adam’s novel Watership Down. In the beginning of the book, the narrator describes how rabbits have innumerable predators but will be equipped with the reflexes and abilities to combat them. Lytle’s wool drawings highlight the rabbit’s agility, reminding us that even the most vulnerable people will survive through tenacity, community, and instinct.
