Repurposeful Reception - Glenda Richardson and Rosalind Robinson of the African American Quilters of Baltimore

Quilters are often called “the original recyclers.” Glenda Richardson and Rosalind Robinson of the African American Quilters of Baltimore represent the best of this tradition. Their quilts are constructed with recycled and repurposed clothing, found objects, buttons, beads, jewelry, lace, and vintage linen. In addition to exhibiting a sensitivity to the current societal focus on waste in the textile industry, the work incorporates materials that have been donated by relatives, friends, and the community with whom they have worked. The inclusion of these items in the work has imbued it with an intrinsic history that adds meaning and depth to the story that each piece tells.
