Traditional Events

Each year, events are hosted to keep up the traditions of university. Student Activities traditional events are those hosted by either the Student Activities Office, SGA, MAP (our programming board), or the class councils. Those events include:

  • American Red Cross Blood Drive: An American Red Cross Blood Drive, sponsored by the Trifecta, which is comprised of SGA, MAP, RHA, is held each spring.

  • Constitution Day: All colleges and universities that receive federal funding are required to celebrate Constitution Day, which is September 17th.
  • End of the Year Bash: Once again, the Trifecta (SGA, MAP, and RHA) team up to host a fun-filled day for students to relax before exams. 

  • Founder’s Day Powderpuff Football Game: The Student Government Association hosts a powderpuff game annually. In 2007, the game was played on October 1st, SU’s Founder’s Day, and the tradition has continued since.

  • Homecoming + Family Weekend: Students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as family and friends are welcomed on campus for Homecoming festivities.  Thursday night highlights the Bonfire and Pep Rally on the Greenspring Campus, sponsored by the Student Government Association and Senior Class Council. Friday night highlights are the Haunted Trail, hosted by the SGA & Junior Class Council, in addition to Midnight Madness, which features our basketball, cheerleading, and dance teams.  On Saturday afternoon, clubs host activities for kids of all ages for the Fanfare Family Fun Day organized by the SGA and Sophomore Council with inflatible obstacle courses, pumpkin painting, and outdoor games, while athletes play alumni games.  In the evening, a headliner event takes place.  Additionally, alumni events are hosted throughout the weekend.
  • Mr. and Ms. SU Pageant: Students compete pageant-style in spirit wear, formal wear, career wear, and a lip sync contest for the chance to be crowned Mr. or Ms. SU!

  • MustangFest: This event is a battle of the bands that usually features SU student performers.  Bands compete for the title of “King of the Hill” as students enjoy the fun atmosphere.

  • National Alcohol Screening Day: The Wellness Center teams with student clubs in screening faculty, staff, and students.  Since 2007, SU has been #1 in screening!

  • New York Trip: Each fall, students, faculty, and alumni take a bus trip to the Big Apple to enjoy shopping and sightseeing during the holiday season.  Friends and family are welcome as well!

  • Rockland Blowout: This celebration started in 2007 as the grand opening for the Rockland Center, which houses a dining hall, conference center, and the Student Activities and Student Affairs Offices.

  • Spring Back to Life: Spring Back to Life is held at the beginning of each spring semester to allow clubs and organizations to recruit more members.
  • Spring Fling: The Freshman Council shows off their leadership skills as they host this annual springtime event filled with fun, games, and entertainment.
  • Welcome Picnic: Held each fall, the Welcome Picnic is a recruitment fair that allows students to find out more information about SU clubs and organizations that interest them while enjoying lunch on us!

We also have annual events that are hosted by individual clubs and organizations. Those events include:

  • American Red Cross Blood Drive: SU’s National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) helps the Red Cross with the blood shortage in our region by hosting an annual blood drive each fall.

  • Basket Bingo: Phi Sigma Sigma, SU’s first sorority on campus, organizes an annual basket bingo to raise money for their philanthropic efforts including partnerships with the American Heart Association and the National Kidney Foundation.

  • Fashion Show:  A themed fashion show is hosted each year by the Black Student Union to showcase student models and trendy styles in a fun-filled performance.

  • Law Day:  The Justice Society organizes Law Day each year, which features law professionals and law school students who provide an opportunity for SU students to gain insight into the field.

  • Rock the Cradle:  Phi Beta Lambda hosts a benefit concert each year to support the March of Dimes known as Rock the Cradle.

  • Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament:  Each year, the Accounting Association hosts a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament for those who want to come out and enjoy food, fun, and a little competition.
