1. Do I need health insurance to attend the university or use Wellness Center services?

  • No. Stevenson University does not require health insurance. The Wellness Center does not accept health insurance. Charges for services are billed to student accounts. The Wellness Center can print receipts which you can submit to your insurance company. Students are encouraged to retain health insurance and carry their card with them (for referrals, lab testing, etc.). Unfortunately, at this time we are not offering a university health insurance plan. Consider the following:

2. Do I need to complete the Student Health Form if I am turning in other health related records to other departments?

  • Yes. All full-time students are required to complete the Student Health Form. Please refer to those specific departments for any health requirement questions, i.e. Athletics, School of Science, and GPS. 

3. How can I obtain my medical/health records in the Wellness Center (including shots and physicals)?

4. What do I do if the Wellness Center has a delayed opening or is closed?

  • If there is a University delay or closure, students should refer to the “Emergency Care” link located on the Wellness Center homepage.

5. What should I expect if I made an appointment with the Wellness Center?

  • Upon arriving to the Wellness Center, you will be asked to sign in. If this if your first appointment with the Wellness Center, you will be asked to complete paperwork before your appointment. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to your initial healthcare or counseling appointment to allow time to complete the paperwork.

6. Who should I contact if I have suggestions for the Wellness Center?

  • Please email or call the Wellness Center.

7. Does the Wellness Center provide notes for excusal from class?

  • The Stevenson University Wellness Center will not provide notes for students who miss class due to minor illness and/or minor injury. Students who need to miss class due to illness/injury are encouraged by the Office of Academic Support Services and by the Stevenson University Wellness Center to notify their faculty that they are ill or injured and unable to attend (and follow the directions provided by the faculty member on the course syllabus.) It is the purview of the faculty to determine when or if a student will be excused from class.
  • This procedure is consistent with our commitment to maintain confidentiality, encourage more appropriate use of health care resources, and support meaningful dialogue between teacher and student. Students are responsible for promptly notifying instructors about absences caused by illness or injury, preferably prior to the class time rather than after the class time.
  • We encourage faculty members to have the appropriate conversation with the student that allows the student to represent the situation to the faculty member. These are conversations that students will need to have with their bosses or supervisors in the future. The University encourages these conversations between faculty and students as a step toward adult independence in such matters -- the conversation that identifies how the student can fulfill their academic responsibilities and continue their academic efforts and achievements, while working around their illness. 

Medical Excuses

  • Please schedule your health visit outside of your set class times, not during.
  • Medical excuses are not automatically issued for every visit.
  • Medical excuses are not given for non-urgent conditions (colds, sore throat, upset stomach, rash, routine appointments/testing consultations, etc.).
  • A medical excuse note will not determine if you will be allowed to make up a missed assignment or if your absence will be officially excused. The decision is solely the responsibility of the instructor.
  • If in our medical opinion, the condition is urgent or serious, a medical excuse note will be given.
  • Students who choose to visit the Wellness Center during class time for non-serious conditions will need to discuss the absence with their instructor.
  • We do not issue medical excuse notes during mid-terms or finals.
  • You are advised not to miss class waiting to be seen.  If you choose to not attend class due to illness, please understand that the absence will need to be discussed with the class instructor and the Wellness Center cannot be responsible for the absence. 
  • Medical excuse notes are not given for students not seen in the Wellness Center.

8. Do returning students need to complete the Student Health Form every year?

  • No. If you were you were previously a part-time student and are now taking 12 or more credits you must complete the Student Health Form upon becoming a full-time student. If you haven’t been a Stevenson University student for at least 2 years and you are reapplying for admission to Stevenson University as a full-time student, you will need to complete another Student Health Form.
