An NCAA Champion

Patrick Watson
Criminal Justice

Senior Criminal Justice major, Patrick Watson, becomes Stevenson's first individual NCAA Division III champion.

Stevenson students naturally push the envelope—we just help pave the way for them.

On November 23, 2019, Stevenson senior Patrick Watson crossed the finish line at the 2019 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships, becoming the first student-athlete in Stevenson history to capture an NCAA individual national championship. That national championship caps a year in which he has been dominant, winning all but one of the eight events in which he competed.

Patrick credits his crowning achievement to the individual attention he received from Head Coach Dave Berdan, a two-time Baltimore Marathon winner. Coach Berdan is the reason Patrick chose Stevenson, confident that his experience would help him reach his goals.

Of Patrick’s success, Coach Berdan says, “As a coach, you’re not always going to be able to have somebody win a national championship. But our goal here is to not just have the best possible athletes, but the best possible people.”
