CORE Program

The CORE (Creating Opportunities for Resident Excellence) Program, co-sponsored by Academic Support Services and Residence Life, is designed to assist residents whose GPAs fall short of the minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA required to live in housing. When a student's cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0, the CORE program allows the student a one semester grace period to improve and meet the GPA requirement.

Am I required to participate in the CORE Program?

Stevenson University is committed to students' academic success; therefore maintaining a 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to live in housing. Any resident whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 is required to participate in the CORE Program in order to retain their housing privilege. If at the end of the semester you still have a sub-2.0 cumulative GPA, you will be ineligible for housing in the residence halls. It is in your best interest to make serious efforts to improve your grades using this program.

What is required of CORE participants?

  • Complete a detailed personal assessment of study habits.
  • A consultation with your assigned CORE Coach to discuss the results.
  • Sign a success contract based on your assessment and consultation.
  • Abide by the terms of the contract.
  • Meet at least once more with your CORE Coach after midterms.

What are possible terms of the success contract?

  • Attend regular 1:1 meetings with my CORE Coach.
  • Use a CORE notebook.
  • Attend the Academic Link for a designated number of hours each week.
  • Meet regularly with my teachers outside of class.
  • Make an appointment with Career HQ to discuss my future plans.
  • Make efforts to find an activity, outside of class, that is personally important.
  • Schedule a meeting with my academic advisor to discuss my options and my progress within my major.
  • Focus my efforts on class attendance and completing all classes for the semester.
  • Make efforts to develop better personal study habits and seek help when needed.
  • Other categories as needed.

How does the Academic Link work?

The Academic Link provides a quiet environment to study away from the noise and distraction of your home. The Academic Link has student monitors, who are present to check you in/out, ensure that noise is kept to a minimum, and answer any questions you may have. Tutors are present to help students and are available to work one-on-one with students to help with specific academic struggles.

Who will know that I am in the CORE Program?

The CORE Coaches, the academic advising team, your instructors, and your parents will know about your placement in CORE. Please be advised that you may be asked to sign a FERPA release so that University personnel can discuss your progress with your parents.

Will the CORE Program help me?

Yes. Will it fix your grades? No. The only person who can do that is you, the student. The CORE coaches will give you every resource SU can offer, but ultimately the responsibility for your grades is on your shoulders.

Does this program replace my academic advisor?

No, we encourage you to meet regularly with your advisor for matters of registration, adding/dropping classes, or inquiries related to your major.

What's the next step?

  1. Make sure to confirm your first meeting with your CORE Coach.
  2. Complete the personal assessment and FERPA form. (Remember, the more honest you are, the more it will help you!)
  3. Attend your first meeting (be on time!) and bring your assessment and form with you.
  4. During that first meeting, discuss the personal assessment with your CORE Coach determine a success contract that you can sign and abide by with hope for improving your grades this semester.
