Resident Assistant Job Description

Academics

  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Effectively balance academic demands, personal life, and RA position performance
  • Receive approval from supervisor prior to participating in secondary employment or major extracurricular activities.

Community Development

  • Foster a sense of community among students living in residence.
  • Know residents individually and develop appropriate relationships with residents as well as other members of SU community.
  • Provide consistent communication with residents via individual interaction, regular community meetings, program development, etc.
  • Work with University staff & residents to maintain safe living conditions.
  • Encourage resident participation in community and campus-wide activities.
  • Foster a residential environment conducive to academic success.

Programming

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate monthly programs & activities for residents.
  • Support and encourage participation in other department-sponsored activities.
  • Involve residents in the planning and implementation process of activities & programs.

Peer Advisor/Referral Person

  • Set an example for residents by role modeling appropriate behavior and attitudes.
  • Help residents adjust to college life with respect to developmental issues.
  • Mediate conflicts between students, including roommate conflicts.
  • Spend adequate time in living community to foster approachability to residents.
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources for assistance and information.
  • Respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintain a positive attitude for SU and the RA position.

Community Standards Agent

  • Adhere to all housing and University policies.
  • Inform residents of policies and procedures as well as safety & security issues.
  • Confront all incidents of inappropriate behavior and refer students for assistance.
  • Document violations of housing/University rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a fair and impartial attitude toward residents regardless of disciplinary history.

Administrative

  • Attend and participate in all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Attend and participate in all training activities.
  • Assist with opening and closing of student housing facilities including move-in/move-out inspections and break inspections. This may require returning to campus prior to opening dates as well as staying beyond the closing dates as directed by the supervisor.
  • Complete routine paperwork (program forms, incident reports, inspection forms, etc.) in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Be on duty for housing area on a rotating basis with other RAs, possibly to include duty coverage during Thanksgiving and Spring Break.
