Choosing the right programPresently, there are an overwhelming number of degrees and programs to choose from. It can be daunting to decide which program will be the right fit for you and your interests. With all the options out there, how can you narrow it down?  As an Enrollment Counselor, I speak with prospective students all the time about this very subject. Here are the steps you can take to help you discover your ideal program:

Create a List

Before you begin your research, I recommend composing a list of what qualities are of value to you in a program. Knowing what you are looking for will help you to narrow your search and make the process of selecting a school less daunting. The two most common values students speak with me about include affordability and online accessibility.

Complete Thorough Research

When researching a school’s affordability, I always advise prospective students to not just look at tuition costs, but also fees. Many schools will require numerous fees including registration, technology, lab, activity – the list can go on and add up very quickly. Students should take the time to thoroughly research the cost of attending by reviewing the school’s website, speaking with an Enrollment Counselor, or asking current students or alumni about their experiences.

A lot of prospective students understand that online courses will better accommodate their busy lives, but they may be unfamiliar with the online environment. I highly recommend preparing for online courses as they require discipline, good time management, and strong writing skills to be successful. Entering an online learning environment without experience can be intimidating; therefore, I encourage prospective students to test out the online environment whenever possible. Many schools have tutorials or online orientations on their websites, which are great avenues to explore what it is like to take an online class prior to enrolling.

Speak with an Enrollment Counselor or Representative

Each school has someone on the enrollment team that can answer your individual questions or concerns about returning to school. Take the opportunity to investigate each aspect of the school and program by speaking directly to the source. As an Enrollment Counselor for the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, I understand that Stevenson University’s programs are not for everyone and it is my goal is to help prospective students decide if we will be a good fit for them.
