My initial goal upon earning my bachelor’s in Biology was to secure a position in biological science. While completing my undergraduate degree at Stevenson University, I had the opportunity to serve as a supplemental instructor and tutor for various science courses. Providing assistance and furthering my fellow students’ knowledge became a great passion of mine. I continued my education in the sciences by earning my Forensic Science master’s with Stevenson and ultimately, I returned to the University again to pursue my Master of Arts in Teaching and change careers.
I was surprised at the exceptional communication and camaraderie that existed between students and faculty in the master's program. Each of my professors served as mentors and helped me achieve the career I desired. The faculty was with us every step of the way from taking the required Praxis, a standardized teaching certification exam, to consistently completing evaluations and recommendations. The graduate program not only taught me the foundations of the discipline, but also allowed me to experience new national trends in the classroom, as well as in the profession. The framework of the Master of Arts in Teaching program is innovative and provides aspiring teachers with relevant teaching strategies and techniques. With the help of my professors, I learned how to engage students and become a successful STEM educator.
After obtaining my master’s degree and teaching certification, I was promoted to a Biomedical and Advanced Placement Biology Teacher in the Biomedical Science and Allied Health Magnet Division in Anne Arundel County. With my educational and professional background in biology and forensic science, I am able to provide my students an authentic perspective. My favorite experiences are all of the hands-on lab work I do with students that enables them to utilize the instruments they will use in their future careers.
In 2016, I was recognized by the Maryland Association of Science Teachers (MAST) as an Outstanding Educator. MAST annually awards individuals in Maryland who have made outstanding contributions to science education. I am passionate about promoting engagement and project-based learning. In my classroom, I try to yield results that prove these techniques are successful. When I won the award, it was affirmation that I am proceeding in the right direction and my teaching strategies are supported. My future goal is to work in administration and spearhead creative science programs and classes to further engage and inspire students to pursue a career in science.

- Program Overview
Stevenson University’s online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for math and science baccalaureate degree graduates who have a desire to teach and a passion for inspiring a new generation of learners. MAT graduates will meet all Maryland initial certification requirements for teaching middle or high school levels (7-12) in one of six math or science content areas. Upon graduation, students will be well-versed in the integrative and collaborative inquiry-based practices of STEM teaching and learning.

Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science, and Mathematics.
The cohort program offers maximum flexibility for the adult learner. Course content is facilitated through engaging online instruction by seasoned educational practitioners. Through classroom field experiences, students will have the opportunity to connect theory with practice. Students will learn how to design and deliver integrated, inquiry, and project and problem-based lessons that align with NSTA Next Gen Science Standards, NCTM Principles to Action, and Common Core State Standards.
- Student Success Coach Support
Upon acceptance into Stevenson University, students are transitioned from an Enrollment Counselor to a Student Success Coach. Through this transition, Counselors and Coaches share the students’ experiences, possible obstacles, and goals that were discussed during the enrollment process. The Coaches then take a fully student-centered approach and serve not only as an advisor, but also as a guide for the students to help them successfully navigate their journey at Stevenson.
Starting at the first meeting, the Coaches work with students to devise a degree plan that is customized to their goals and accommodates their work schedules, financial situations, and familial and personal obligations. The Coaches help students create a path to graduation and assist them in visualizing and achieving their goals. As many of the Coaches were adult students themselves, they understand that proactive communication, support, and flexibility are key elements to the success of adult students as they continue their education.
