  • Program Overview

    Stevenson University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for math and science baccalaureate degree graduates who have a desire to teach and a passion for inspiring a new generation of learners. MAT graduates will meet all Maryland initial certification requirements for teaching middle or high school levels (7-12) in one of six math or science content areas. Upon graduation, students will be well-versed in the integrative and collaborative inquiry-based practices of STEM teaching and learning.

    The online cohort program offers maximum flexibility for the adult learner. Course content is facilitated through engaging online instruction by seasoned educational practitioners. Through classroom field experiences, students will have the opportunity to connect theory with practice. Students will learn how to design and deliver integrated, inquiry, and project and problem-based lessons that align with NSTA Next Gen Science Standards, NCTM Principles to Action, and Common Core State Standards.

  • Courses


    Stevenson’s Master of Arts in Teaching is an online, 33-credit hour cohort program. A cohort model is one in which candidates begin the program at the same time and follow a sequential course track in order to graduate as a group. Cohort members build strong relationships and develop a sense of community as they engage in learning that is collaborative and team-based.

    Courses are offered in 8-week sessions with cohorts starting in the fall (August) and spring (January) semesters. In the final semester, teacher candidates complete a full-time teaching internship as a requirement of certification.  The sequence of courses for both options is listed in the Cohort Sequence Chart.

  • Admission Requirements

    Admissions Requirements

    • Completed online application. 
    • Completion of bachelor’s degree in a science or math discipline from a regionally accredited institution
    • Official college transcripts from all previous academic work
    • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in past academic work
    • Analysis of transcripts to determine if all required content coursework has been met to satisfy field of licensure (Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Physical Science, Physics, or Mathematics) requirements.
    • Qualifying score on PRAXIS CORE, PRAXIS I, GRE, SAT, or ACT according to MSDE certification criteria.
    • Two letters of recommendation (professional or academic)
    • Personal statement.

    Prior to Teaching Internship

    • Completion of any additional undergraduate-level content coursework necessary to meet the 30-credit hour course requirements in the field of licensure 
    • Criminal background check and fingerprinting
    • Passing score on PRAXIS® II Subject Assessment for the intended area of certification (biology, chemistry, or mathematics)

    Degree Requirements

    • 100-day teaching internship that takes places across two semesters, one semester being a full-time teaching experience
    • Successful portfolio review documenting mastery of core teacher standards
    • Demonstrated competency on the Maryland Teacher Technology Standards and Maryland STEM Standards of Practice
    • Original action research project on a topic related to instructional practice
    • Minimum 3.00 GPA
    • Qualifying scores on PRAXIS® II

    The following reflects the total cost of a master’s degree if completing 33-credit hours. Students are eligible to transfer up to 6-credit hours from a 4-year institution if applicable.
