Adam’s Crayons: A Tale of a Few Stories
Barry Nemett and Laini Nemett
February 14-April 16
Reception February 17, 6-8 p.m.
Gallery
The story behind this exhibit starts with a children’s book, Adam’s Crayons (Galileo Press), written by Niki Leopold and illustrated by Laini and Barry Nemett. The book, scheduled for release in March, is almost thirty years in the making. In 1983, Barry had a painting exhibition featuring gatherings of animals—“peaceable kingdoms”—at C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. Inspired by Adam, the artist’s then two-year-old son, the exhibit, in turn, inspired the author.
Leopold approached Barry and his daughter, Laini, to illustrate what she wrote. This exhibition—which includes all the images from the book, as well as related examples of the collaborating artists’ drawings and paintings—tells the tale of these stories.
Artist and educator Barry Nemett has exhibited his work and lectured worldwide. He has been on faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art since 1971 and has served as Chair of the Painting Department since 1992. After receiving her degree from Brown University, Laini Nemett, received a Fulbright Scholarship and studied in Spain. She is currently working toward her MFA at the Hoffberger School of Painting.
