As a child and young adult in South Africa from the early 60’s to the mid 80’s, I noticed an absurd impulse among the Afrikaner power structure of the time to issue contradictory orders; no matter how you complied, you would still be at fault in some way. This primitive and seemingly perverse tactic was seized upon by dull-witted functionaries as a means to keep their subordinates perpetually of-balance in an attempt to assert their fragile authority. One may imagine that this clumsy strategy was unproductive and certainly no durable means of maintaining power, but it illustrates an approach to drawing; constantly reconciling mark and image, moment and duration, the intimate act of making and the distanced logic of editing. The scale of the objects, their surfaces and colours make them appear accessible and inviting. At a distance, while still unrecognizable and mysterious they attract, but are jarring once associations are realized upon closer inspection. As an attempt to deny the viewer the comfortable middle ground, it may seem odd to apply a question¬able management practice from a discredited era, these contradictory urges are ingrained.
