2009-2010 Freshman Scholarship Program

We believe in recognizing and rewarding your academic achievements. That's why, in addition to a substantial need-based financial aid program, the University has developed a generous merit-based scholarship program for incoming freshmen that considers all applicants, regardless of financial need.

All merit-based awards are good for four consecutive years of study at the University, provided the student maintains the minimum required GPA (2.6 at the end of year one, 2.8 at the end of year two, and 3.0 for years three and four) and completes a minimum of 30 on-campus Leadership Experience or Activity Hours per semester. If you qualify for an award in more than one category, the Scholarship Committee will grant you the highest single award for which you are eligible.

In addition, we encourage you to apply for need-based financial aid. Stevenson University offers over $4 million in need-based grants to assist students with the costs of tuition and room and board.

Merit-Based Scholarships:

The University offers three levels of merit-based awards to select highly-qualified students. When awarding scholarships, SU considers the rigor of a student's high school curriculum in addition to his/her academic GPA and standardized test scores. The following chart reflects the minimum requirements for consideration, and a range of award amounts students typically recieve.

Merit-Based Scholarship Chart

Award* Amount Academic GPA
on a 4.0 scale
SAT Score
President's Scholarship $11,000-full tuition 3.7 1800
Dean's Scholarship $8,000+ 3.4 1650
Trustee's Scholarship $5,000+ 3.0 1500

Maryland Distinguished Scholars:

SU recognizes students who have been honored as Maryland Distinguished Scholars (MDS) for their academic achievement. Finalists automatically qualify for a President's Scholarship in the amount of full tuition, Semi-Finalists automatically qualify for a President's Scholarship in the amount of $18,000, and Honorable Mention students qualify for awards based on grades and SAT/ACT scores, in accordance with the chart above. Please note that the University does not award recipients of MDS in the Talent in the Arts category. Finalists should also note that this award is separate from the $3,000 they receive from the state for attending college in Maryland.

*Please note that all scholarships are competitive and the exact amount of a student's scholarship is determined by the Scholarship Committee after s/he is accepted to the University. Also, the scholarship program changes from each year based on the quality of the applicant pool.
