Editor’s Note: Throughout the summer we’ll be featuring a post by one or more of our Orientation & Welcome Leaders (OWLs). The OWLs are current undergraduates at Stevenson who serve as orientation assistants for incoming students and tour guides for prospective students throughout the summer. As their name suggests, the OWLs are very wise and will be offering valuable and timely advice to the Class of 2021. We hope you enjoy this summer series on the Admissions Blog – Words from the Wise.
This week's "Words from the Wise" contributor is Senior Orientation & Welcome Leader, Peter Appiah, Jr. '19. Peter is a Legal Studies major from Silver Spring, MD.
The 2017 Orientation & Welcome Leaders
Every year, Stevenson handpicks a select group of students to work over the summer to welcome prospective students and families to campus and assist the incoming class of Mustangs! Those special students are known as Orientation & Welcome Leaders, OWLs. OWLs are a group of enthusiastic students who are a mix of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. OWLs represent the six undergraduate schools at SU: Brown School of Business and Leadership, School of Education, School of Design, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Fine School of the Sciences, and Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions. We arrived to Stevenson from a variety of places including New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and more. There is more to the OWLs than just the places we are from. Amidst our differences that make us who we are, the one thing that is the same is our love for Stevenson and our passion to share it with everyone else.
OWLs have two main responsibilities during the summer. Before Mustang Days (the summer registration and orientation program), OWLs provide campus tours to prospective students and families and help Admissions as well as other departments with summer projects. During Mustang Days, OWLs help incoming students with their schedules and registering, answer any questions they may have about SU and student life, and make sure they feel welcomed to their new home!
Admissions staff and Senior OWLs lead training to prepare for the summer
As one of the four fantastic Senior OWLs, my responsibility is to lead and guide the other twelve OWLs into owl-hood. The Senior OWLs have at least one year of experience heading into the position.
Looking back at my own Mustang day, I remember being late because my mother and I went to the wrong campus. Hopefully, you won’t do that! I also remember feeling very nervous - terrified would be a better word to describe how I felt, honestly. I was worried I didn’t know anyone. I did not know I would be greeted by the warm smiles and the friendly atmosphere the OWLs presented to me. I did not know I would be meeting potential roommates, and the last thing I did not know was that I was going to create lasting memories on my Mustang Day.
I hope we can provide the same experience to all of you. We are very excited to get to know you all in the upcoming months. OWL be seeing you all soon!
