Editor's Note: Today we welcome Morgan Somerville, Stevenson's Director of Student Engagement, as a guest author on the Admissions Blog. In her role, Morgan oversees student employment on campus.

Greetings from the Student Engagement Office!  I hope you are enjoying your summer and are excited to begin your journey at Stevenson later this summer!  Many of you may be working this summer as a lifeguard, camp counselor, or cashier to earn some spending money. Throughout Mustang Days I heard from many of you, and your parents, about how to transition the skills you acquired through your part-time employment throughout high school and this summer to a part-time job on campus. The answer?  It is very simple!  All of our on campus positions are posted on our Employment Opportunities Website: https://stevenson.peopleadmin.com.  I refer to this link as one-stop shopping.  Through this one website you may search for positions as well as apply directly to the jobs that interest you.  Almost one quarter of our student body holds an on campus job.  Every office and department on campus employs students to assist with a variety of programs, tasks, and projects.  Students are hired as Tutors, Ambassadors, Fitness Center Assistants, Coffee Baristas, Lab Assistants, and even as our loveable mascot, Wild Stang.

The Employment Opportunities website is live and changes almost daily to represent the current open positions on campus.  I encourage you to check this site regularly to search for positions that may fit your experience or interest.  With August right around the corner, you will begin to see an increase in the number of positions that are posted for you to apply.  When you first log on to this site, you will be prompted to create a new account.  Please use your Stevenson login as your username and password.  From there, the site will request your contact information, previous employment history, and your schedule of availability.  Please be sure to accurately enter this information so supervisors can contact you for an interview.

As you search through our available student employment positions, you will notice some jobs are listed as “Student Work-Study” under position type.  This means the jobs are for students with Work-Study funding only.  This funding is awarded to students by the Financial Aid Office and added to your award package.  If you are interested in being reviewed for Work-Study funding, please send an e-mail to the Financial Aid Office to request consideration at financial-aid@stevenson.edu.  If you do not have this funding, you can absolutely work on campus, however, please apply to the positions that are not listed as Work-Study. Non-work-study jobs are listed as “Student Employee” rather than “Student Work-Study.”  If you were awarded Work-Study funding as part of your Financial Aid Award, please be on the lookout for an e-mail inviting you to attend a Work-Study Workshop after the school year begins where the details of this program will be explained.  This workshop is co-hosted by the Financial Aid Office and the Student Engagement Office.

If you were not awarded Work-Study funding, do not worry. We have many non-work study positions available to students.  Please take a look at our Employment Opportunities website for a list of these on-campus positions.  If you are interested in a specific type of job or working in a particular office, please feel free to contact me and I can provide more information about these opportunities.

As you are preparing to start your first year at Stevenson, you may be a bit nervous about how to balance your time and throwing a part time job into the mix may seem overwhelming.  The good news, is our on-campus supervisors all recognize that you are a student first, and we are here to support your success. Most on-campus jobs require students to work 10-12 hours per week in a schedule that is created around your class times.  There are many advantages to working on campus, including a short commute, flexible hours, and the ability to connect with fellow students, staff, and faculty within the office where you are working.  One of our student employees summarized the experience of working on campus by sharing,

“Working on campus helped me cultivate techniques I was learning inside the classroom and put them to use outside of the classroom and in my position on campus. Working with SU faculty and staff also allowed for having a mentor who helped me to explore and better understand what I was looking for in a career while doing "real work." There were a lot of different aspects of the University I was able to see through working on campus, and apply them to my professional career by having a much broader experience. Not to mention all of the perks that came with it: I got to meet a ton of other students; get a "support system" through everyone in the office I was in; gain real world experience through attending meetings, assisting in daily tasks, and brainstorming new ideas.”

I look forward to meeting many of you during the fall semester and invite you to attend the Part Time Jobs Fair on Thursday, August 31 from 11am-1pm in the Rockland Banquet Room on the Owings Mills Campus.  This fair will have a variety of on-campus and off-campus employers looking to hire students just like you!
