Planning Your Internship

Information for Current SU Students

For-credit Art Internships have two components, a class work component and an on-site internship component. ART 390 (the first internship course) must be taken PRIOR to a student doing his/her first internship. ART 490 (the second internship course) is taken concurrently with a student's second internship.

Planning for a First Internship (ART 390: Parts I & II)

Register for ART 390 at least one semester before you want to do the internship. If you want to do a fall internship, you should take ART 390 the previous spring semester. If you want to do a summer internship, take ART 390 during the Fall or Spring before. ART 390 is not currently offered in May term or Summer sessions.

Eligibility for first internship

  1. Students must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  2. Students must have completed ART 221 and ART 390 (Part I) prior to the start of their first internship.
  3. Interested students must meet with their academic advisor to determine their eligibility and to register for ART 390.

Planning for a Second Internship (ART 490)

Students who have successfully completed ART 390, can do a second internship for credit. Once students have secured a second internship, they will:

  • Write placement goals and objectives building upon previous internship experience.
  • Have a meeting with the Internship Coordinator to review internship description, goals and objectives, and program agreement.
  • Turn in a Program Agreement signed by the student and the on-site supervisor. The Art Internship Coordinator will also sign the Program Agreement, if approved.
  • Register for ART 490 (taken concurrently) once the internship is approved and a Program Agreement has been completed.
