Visual Communication Design News

Keyword: visual communication design

This last weekend, the Visual Communication Design majors traveled to New York City for the day. It was a cold rainy day, but we still had a fabulous time! We checked out the artist books at Printed Matter, the many galleries in Chelsea Gallery District, saw Tom Geismar visiting his own exhibition at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, struck speechless by the characters in Time Square (including the famous Naked Cowboy), and we also had a great time at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). Here some photos of our students having fun at MAD!...

Alaina Hall

O! PosterAlaina Hall can! Design Kudos for Alaina Hall, junior VCD major, who submitted her poster to the Baltimore chapter of AIGA O! Say poster competition. Alaina’s design received one of 20 Awards of Excellence. Her poster is currently featured with 19 professional graphic designers in the University of Baltimore’s Student Center Gallery.

You can view all entrants’ submissions here.

Heather Sarkissian, a Corporate Innovation Manager at DAP, visited students in their Relationship of Design and Business class last week. Ms. Sarkissian presented the process by which her corporation outsources design to smaller design companies and what they look for when collaborating with creative people.  Afterwards, students led a discussion informed by the questions they had to research before her visit. Some challenging questions were about corporations creating innovative solutions, the role of failure in design, and importance of end user research in design.

Above is an example of the design exercises we did that day before she arrived.

The Freshman AVCD students were supplied blank sketchbooks at Mustang Days and were ask to make art of any kind over the summer.

The results must

  • be something you enjoyed doing
  • be something you are interested in
  • communicate something about you
  • use the sketchbook in some way

And these are some of their outcomes!

As we busily prepare for an upcoming trip to Italy, we reflect on the successful trip to Eastern Europe last spring.

In March 2014, our photo students went on a photographic tour of five countries in Eastern Europe. With 19 students and three faculty members, we set off on an amazing journey that took us through Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, and Austria. We went on a breathtaking sunset boat tour up the danube River while in Budapest,  and we explored the King's Castle on Wawel Hill while in Krakow. Our students were stunned by the macabre beauty of the "bone church" in Kutna Hora (just outside of Prague), and were amazed by the beauty of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna....Click here to read more.
