As we busily prepare for an upcoming trip to Italy, we reflect on the successful trip to Eastern Europe last spring.

In March 2014, our photo students went on a photographic tour of five countries in Eastern Europe. With 19 students and three faculty members, we set off on an amazing journey that took us through Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, and Austria. We went on a breathtaking sunset boat tour up the danube River while in Budapest,  and we explored the King's Castle on Wawel Hill while in Krakow. Our students were stunned by the macabre beauty of the "bone church" in Kutna Hora (just outside of Prague), and were amazed by the beauty of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna....Click here to read more.

The Stevenson University Visual Communication Design program requires every student to complete a 120-hour internship. Valerie Shaney, a senior Photography Track student and a passionate portrait photographer, just completed her internship with Photography by Brea (http://www.bybrea.com/), a wedding photography company located in Reisterstown, MD. Her internship mentor, Breanna Shaw, allowed her to work on site assisting at her clients’ weddings and engagement shoots, as well as in the office.

This gave Valerie the opportunity to experience the hands-on aspects of wedding and portrait photography while also learning how to run a successful business. She completed her required hours primarily shooting weddings on spectacular summer weekends, but also put in office hours during the weekdays. ...Click here to read more.

Help-Portrait Collage 2013

Imagine not having a professional photograph taken of you in 30 years. That was a reality for many men in the recovery program at Helping Up Mission and their families, before they came to Help-Portrait.

18 Stevenson students, faculty, and community members volunteered at this year’s Help-Portrait event in downtown Baltimore. Photography students grabbed their cameras and photographed those in need. Visual Communication Design students used their digital imaging expertise to give the portraits a professional touch. When the prints were ready, the photographs were delivered. The day was about “giving” the pictures, not “taking” them. Help-Portrait is a global movement, and to date 282,295 people have been given their portraits at these events.

This was the second year that students in Stevenson’s Art & VCD program, AIGA, and Photography Club have participated in this event. An exhibition of the Baltimore Help-Portrait photos will be held in the Stevenson School of Design Gallery in November 2014.
