Stevenson's Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology combines the sciences of biology and chemistry with medicine and the clinical sciences to prepare you for a professional career as a medical laboratory scientist, also known as medical technologist.
Bachelor of Science
Stevenson's Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology is offered in conjunction with Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. The program consists of two years of prerequisite courses in the basic sciences and liberal arts, a third year of liberal arts and professional courses in laboratory medicine, and a fourth year that integrates professional and clinical practicum courses at the Sinai Hospital campus. Unlike other programs in the state, SU's program includes a management practicum in the fourth year, preparing you for leadership positions.
With a degree in Medical Technology, you will be qualified to work in all areas of the medical laboratory, including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, blood banking, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.
You will also be prepared to take the national certification examination for medical laboratory scientists and to pursue graduate study in medical technology or any of its related areas.

- Demonstrate proficiency in performing the full range of clinical laboratory tests in the contemporary clinical laboratory.
- Evaluate test systems and diagnostic algorithms in terms of diagnostic value, compliance outcomes, and cost-effectiveness.
- Evaluate the results of laboratory analyses for accuracy and validity, and correlate laboratory data to disease processes.
- Apply the principles and practices of quality assurance/quality improvement as applied to the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical components of laboratory services.
- Exhibit the ethical and professional behaviors required within the healthcare delivery system.
- Demonstrate skills in laboratory information systems that will enable timely, accurate, and confidential reporting of laboratory data.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to consult with members of the healthcare team, to provide patient education and customer service, and to interact with external parties.
- Use research design and practice skills to evaluate published studies and investigate clinical laboratory issues and problems.
- Exhibit an understanding of the concepts and principles of laboratory management such as human resource management, finance, operations, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, critical pathways, and clinical decision-making.
- Demonstrate understanding of education techniques and terminology to train and educate users and providers of laboratory services.
- Seek national certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Categorical Certificate Training Program
This part-time program provides rapid training for individuals who possess a bachelor's degree in biology, biotechnology, chemistry or other basic science to enter the clinical laboratory workforce. Students who successfully complete all the requirements of a structured program in one of the specialty disciplines under the auspices of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology Program receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to take a categorical examination for certification as a Categorical Technologist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC). A minor is available in Medical Technology. A student wishing to take any course for the Medical Technology minor must meet the prerequisite(s) for the particular course. Students must take six courses that count in the Medical Technology major. Please see the program coordinator of Medical Technology for more information. For specific information regarding minor requirements, please consult the minors section of the catalog.
Community College of Baltimore County, Associate of Applied Science, Medical Laboratory Technology: It is possible for students to transfer 66-69 credits from CCBC that count in the SU core curriculum and the medical technology curriculum.
Anne Arundel Community College, Associate of Applied Science, Medical Laboratory Technology (under annual review): It is possible for students to transfer 67-70 credits from AACC that count in the SU core curriculum and the medical technology curriculum.
