Guidelines to Get on the Right Track to Achieve your Goals

1. Investigate the different health professions careers

2. Visit the Health Professions Resource Area in the Science Seminar Room (SC 116)

  • Information sheets and brochures are available for you to take
  • Videos and CDs of various schools are available for you to borrow
  • Information on individual schools is present in the specific health professions binders on the shelves

3. Explore the professional organization

4. Determine the length of the programs (3 - 4+ years) - Many programs require internships and/or residencies after the graduate program.

5. Know the required prerequisites - What courses do you need to take in college? Different schools may have different requirements.

6. Check your SU email for announcements of open houses, talks and workshops for the different health professions programs.

7. Check the two bulletin boards outside of SC 102 for important information and upcoming events.

8. Get experience in the field (Nursing Home, Hospital, Physical Therapy Practice, Veterinary Hospital, Pharmacy -- volunteer or paid)

9. Participate in community service outside of SU (Food Bank, Homeless Shelters)

10. Participate in collegiate activities (Society of Science and Mathematics, Service Corps, SGA). Obtain leadership experience by serving as an officer.

11. Obtain research experience (BIO and CHEM: 265, 3654, 450, 460, 460H) or paid job.
