Admission Procedures and Requirements for Transfer and Second Bachelor's Students
Admission to the Nursing Program for transfer and second bachelor's students is a two step process. Students must first be accepted to the University as degree seeking students. Applications will then be reviewed for acceptance into the Nursing major. Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to the major. Students are encouraged to apply by January and no later than April 1st. Students are accepted to begin their nursing courses for Fall start only.
Effective Fall 2009, transfer students accepted to Nursing will begin the program with 300 level nursing courses. In order to be eligible, students must have completed all prerequisites and met all admission requirements outlined below. Students have the option of completing the prerequisites at any regionally accredited university or college including Stevenson University.
Prerequisite course requirements for first-time bachelor's degree students:
- General Biology with Lab (4 credits)
- General, Organic and Biochemistry with Lab (4 credits)
- Human Anatomy with Lab (4 credits)*
- Human Physiology with Lab (4 credits)*
- Microbiology with Lab (4 credits)
- Nutrition (3 credits)
- Statistics (3 or 4 credits)
- Human Growth & Development (3 credits)
- Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)
- Introduction to Sociology (3 credits)
- English Composition (3 credits)
- Writing About Literature (3 credits)
- English Writing (200+) (3 credits)
- Physical Education or Health (1 credit)
- Fine Arts (Art, Music or Theater) (3 credits)
- Three Humanities (History, Religion, Philosophy or additional Literature) (9 credits total from three different disciplines)
- Intro to Professional Nursing and Computer Applications (3 credits) **
Prerequisite course requirements for second-time bachelor's degree students:
- General Biology with Lab (4 credits)

*Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab (4 credits) and Human Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab (4 credits) will be accepted as transfer credits at the 200 level for Human Anatomy with Lab (4 credits) and Human Physiology with Lab (4 credits).
**This Stevenson University course will be taken by all transfer students accepted into the nursing major the summer prior to starting the 300-level sequence.
Nursing Division Admission Criteria to the 300 Level Clinical Nursing Courses:
- Successful completion of all prerequisite coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in the required sciences
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in all prior college courses
- Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Microbiology must have been successfully completed within five years of program entry.
- A maximum of one science course may be repeated.
- International students must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English proficiency. Any student whose native or official language is not English must submit an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score. Students who have earned a score of 520 or higher on the SAT critical reading test may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement. The website for TOEFL information is www.ets.org.
- In addition, students must submit the following:
- Personal statement describing his/her goal to become a nurse.
- Resume of work, volunteer, and educational experience.
- Plan of completion of remaining prerequisite course work including course information, location of attendance, and expected dates of completion.
- Nursing program decision letters are mailed after February 1 on a monthly basis. Accepted students will receive information regarding advising, registration and other enrollment requirements and procedures, including the mandatory completion of the Student Health Form.
Policies for Continuance and Progression for Nursing Majors
Admission to Stevenson University
- Submit a completed Stevenson University Undergraduate Application in either paper form or Apply Online. Please note your intended major as 'Nursing' (not RN to BS) and indicate your desired attendance as either full or part time.
- Applicants to SU's Nursing Program are considered for Fall starts only. Applicants wishing to attend SU to complete the prerequisite courses are considered for both Fall and Spring starts.
- Request official transcripts from all previously attended colleges to be sent to: Stevenson University, Admissions Office, 10945 Boulevard Circle, Owings Mills, MD 21117
Official transcripts from students who have completed coursework outside the United States must be evaluated by a recognized international credit evaluation service. Only the following agencies are acceptable:
- World Evaluation Service
- American Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers
